Title: Major Release News ~ Two Million Hits! Live-A-Live v2.0 Deluxe Released!
Post by: Gideon Zhi on May 28, 2008, 06:17:45 PM
Not much else to say, really. It´s been a long road but we´re finally here, and from my *own* experience playing the game today, the wait was damn well worth it. I hope that you all feel the same way!

The new version includes...
-560 kilobytes of English script: Twice the size of the original translation!
-Main dialogue, menu, and battle fonts are now fully proportional!
-Each chapter now has its own unique font - even the Japanese version can´t say this! Live-A-Live now sports a total of ten different fonts.
-Kung Fu names are now Chinese, not Japanese!
-Items, techniques, and equipment names expanded dramatically due to new fonts!

It was a real pleasure betatesting this sucker. Some day I will play it without my finger on the fast-forward key the whole time. :)

Part of the readme is misspelled - You forgot an "L"...

"if your ROM is called "lal.smc" make sure the patch
is "al.ips" okay?"

I'm about to see if my game's got a header on it. Here's to anticipation!

This is more appropriate than you may think. I've found three things wrong with the damn game already :p Cosmetics, but still.

It begins!  ...As soon as I get about 15 hours of sleep, the playing shall commence.  Thanks so much to Mr. Zhi for yet another fine translatamajig, and thanks anyone who helped you out as well (Liana for example.)  The more I look at this game the more fun it looks.  The map screens look like FF IV but the battle graphics remind me of Seiken Densetsu 3.  Uwaaa.

And mission accomplished, don't get me started.  Someone should shop Bush onto the cover of Mission Impossible.  ...Don't get me started on Tom Cruise either.

It's back and better than ever! The Kung Fu chapter is so much nicer now. Thanks a ton!

"It's a Taeko Punch!"

Edit: The Technique names are great, too. I want to try the Ninja chapter now, to see how they've changed, but I have to finish the Mecha one first. It always beats me up pretty badly!

Just finished my run through last night - AWESOME upgrade to the original!

I'm still trying to figure out how the #%^# you managed to get the font to change on the fly in the middle of the same -text bubble-...

Only a couple cosmetic glitches that I saw (mostly the + to stats on the item descriptions being half overwritten, and Akira's 'END' was the only one that looked modified and I kinda miss the o-wa-ri from before, somehow seemed fitting).

Great job, Gid!  I wonder if there are any other early AG patches you're quietly upgrading on the side... <.<

Yeah, that's a really cool effect, isn't it? Probably my favorite overall improvement.

It's actually pretty simple. The game initializes to a "default" font for every single text window (the system menu font.) At any time I can tell it to print a different font - usually, it's done at the start of the string, before any text displays. In those specific instances, however, I just inserted multiple font-change codes in random places throughout the text, like an HTML tag.

But yeah, you gotta love that effect :D

I figured all you did was make use of the tiles for the 20 or so pages of Kanji that were initially reserved for the Kung-Fu chapter.

Incidentally, you misspelled the name of the Mother Computer in the future chapter as 01-D0. This mistake was also present in the first attempt at translating, so I'm actually guessing this was Square's fault and you just input what you saw.

Actually I have this program, LunarIPS I think? I'd recommend getting it. You click it and tell all .IPS files to read as files for it. Then, you click your patches and you click the ROM when prompted. REALLY easy.

If you actually use the method I'll bother explaining it so it can be comprehended.

I'd like to thank everybody involved in the project for this great release! 'been looking forward to it for a while and have already started playing. The only noticeable bug is that the stats from the equipment screen get printed somewhat to the main menu in ZSNES 1.51, but I'm sure you guys already know about that one.

A question: Does anybody know the different between Atk and St? And the difference between Def and Vt? It would be nice if there was an explanation for that somewhere, 'cause I haven't found it yet.

ATK and Def at yer Weapon and Armor's direct modifiers, while Str and Con/Vit are character based modifiers. Some attacks factor weapons and armor into the equation, others not. A good example would be Pogo's Bash Bash as a Weapon attack, while his Bang Bang is strictly Str based.

A good example of Def/Vit would be to give Bel the Wild Dress. Makes her Def stupidly high, but her natural stats are notabley poor. Meanwhile, Gori has abismal gear available but is rather sturdy. Havin' them take a rend attack from a Saber Tooth will wound Bel far more then Gori. Meanwhile, other attacks (Granted none gome to mind at present) that have to contend more with Armor will find Bel the harder target to damage.

I managed to find a emulator the game works on, but for some reason after I stopped play, the game save seems to have deleted itself, sending me back WAY far into the game. What happened?

Just finished the game - the last boss was much easier than I remembered.  I must have powered up more this time. =P

I can't believe I had trouble with it the first time around, I must have really rushed through the final chapter.

Well, I seem to have messed something up anyhow - I was trying to get the 'normal' ending first, but it seems I am unable to at the moment.  Checking into it, it said you have to have each character JOIN at least once, but it seems just having them offer to join is good enough.  The only one I didn't have enter my party at all was Masaru, although I spoke with him, yet it appears that the good ending went ahead regardless.

So, anyway, what's the difference in the ending then?

Hi,
Thanks to everyone involved in the project, I looove the game!

I just a noticed one typo, I don't think it's been mentioned yet:

In the near future chapter, right after Kazu was abducted and rescued, you find yourself inside Chibbiko's house. If you read the director's mind, instead of "Watanabe", he mentions "Watanbe".

That's my small contribution! ^^

Thanks again!

Hello everyone, I am Indogutsu Tenbuki, an amateur (RPG Maker 2000) game designer, MIDI musician, and emulation enthusiast.

First of all, I must express my most heartfelt gratitude to Gideon Zhi and the Aeon Genesis team for giving us English-speakers the chance to play one of Squaresoft's most creative and fun, yet frequently overlooked, titles. I've been a fan of the game since the first translation was released on Christmas 2001; its story, characters, and soundtrack have inspired me greatly. In fact, my current RPG Maker project is a continuation of the Dragon Quest IV story, in which the protagonist is initially well-meaning, but gradually descends deeper into vice and hatred as a result of others' unkindness.

In short, thank you for another wonderful translation, and Square Enix should remake THIS game instead of giving us yet another Final Fantasy rehash.

Oh, I forgot to ask you... Is there a place where I could get Windows versions of the fonts used in the LAL v2.0 translation? Those are by far the most notable additions to the new version, in my opinion, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw O(e)rsted use two different fonts in the same text box. It was very late at night and I thought I was dreaming, or hallucinating...

"No more love or peace in my world... All that remains is DaRkNeSS..." or something like that.

I did notice a few translation errors, though. For example, the item "Algos's Eye" (Item 08) is supposed to be "Eye of Argus," (or Argos) since it refers to the story of Argus Panoptes in Greek mythology.

Since you receive the King's Fang (Item 4B) from King Mammoth, isn't it supposed to be a tusk and not a fang? Japanese has the same word for both (kiba).

Item B4 is translated as "Mastu Rocket" in the new translation. Shouldn't it be a locket and not a rocket, though? It can be equipped as an accessory. Also, you must've misspelled Matsu's name by accident.

Good call on some of the new item and skill translations! The English names for Oboro-maru's techs made them easier to remember and apply in battle. And changing the dresses in the medieval and final chapters (Items 13, E8, E9) into robes was another good idea, since all but two of the playable characters are male!

Lucky guys, I can't even get it to play! I patch it, run it, and it just shows a black screen! :( I fast forward it, and the emulator's screen turns red for a sec. Then nothing happens again! I may not have waited as long as some people here for the patch, but it's annoying when, all day in school you can't wait to play a game, only to have it not work. I dunno if it's the ROM, the patching program (Lunar Expansion), or my emulator (I use SNES9X). If any help is given, I will greatly appreciate it.

Great Job.

Anyway, I have problem when I manually patched it. It was black screen with all emulater and said bad rom. But when I put the rom and ips in the same folder then run them with ZSNES, it worked fine.

Does anyone try to play the patched rom on PSP?

so i noticed the patch does not work on the h1, f1, p1, and regular j dumps
i thought this was because they had a header but it turns out they didnt according to the readme (which had a few typos that threw me off a little)
i assume this means all 4 dumps were interleaved

guess i will have to wait for pre-patched to start floating around

good news: i found it prepatched

bad news: on mac snes9x it crashes whenever you open up a window (pressing the x button or even trying to combo items in pogo's chapter); it also hates it if you press start at the title screen instead of "a" and retaliates by crashing

side news: what i saw did look nice; also i forgot to mention nsrt for mac right now is corrupt (version 3.4 anyway) which means i cant play other games like wozz or magna braban or metal max returns or others translated recently (well actually i found wozz and braban prepatched also; wozz by the way is a nice game)

yeah i know get an intel... in a couple years i will

Hmm. I'm glad to see so many people like this game. Personally, I hated it. But that's my problem, and not the point I'm here to make. The point that I want to make is, as much as I dislike the game, as boring as I thought it was, after seeing how much effort you put into this game even I'm tempted to give it a try. I'm really impressed with how much you've upgraded everything, especially since it's at no profit to you. You must really be passionate about hacking, huh?

If you have 99 Leather Cord when you use rescue Bel for the first time, Pogo's sprite will turn into an off-color Meatbone and the sequence will stop.
