Title: Star Ocean: to the cosmos.
Post by: Duke Fleed on September 13, 2007, 06:35:36 PM
According to various sources, there are 3 Star Ocean games coming out.  This one, which is a remake of Star Ocean 1.  These are real screens of it supposedly.  Look familiar?  It looks almost identical to Star Ocean: the second story for PSX.

The next Star Ocean is also a PSP exclusive, it's a remake of Star Ocean 2 (no screens/boxshots available yet, appologies)

The third star ocean will be for playstation 3 exclusively.  That's all I know about it.

Sorry, here's another screen...I must've mistyped the link or something.

But, are they going to fill the holes left in the SNES version, or are they just gonna do a direct port of the story? I'll be thrilled if they actually put effort in the remake and manage to fix the problems the original had, such as the all-to-abrupt end area.

I think it's too early to tell what it will have...I just hope to sweet god that it is released in North America.

I heard the star ocean 2 is going to be combined with blue sphere as well.  But that's just a rumor.  I'm glad it's getting a release because people seem to think the psp has no good RPGs.

Keep your fingers crossed for front mission 5.

I don't really have high hopes for the PSP remakes as they are not done by tri-Ace. SO4 isn't announced as PS3 exclusive btw., and I doubt SE lets pass the chance to bring the game to the XBox 360 as well at least in the West.

Regarding the character redesigns:

I know what you mean about the redesigns which is pretty serious grievance but the gameplay in the games should be pretty solid.

I like Claude's design, actually. Ratix looks nothing like himself and if that's Dorn he should be fatter (I don't know why, I just always imagine Dorn as being fat for some reason).

Looks pretty cool, but I don't have a PSP or a PS3 (nor do I plan on buying either), and SO3 kind of made me stop caring about SO.

I'm not picky at all about the character designs. Though the character designs for Claude always made me wonder if he had a little beer belly going on for him. (I don't know why.)

Either way, this should make me happy for having a PSP. I wonder what the next installment of the series will be like, the so called secret project.

Second: Hilarious.
Third: It really wouldn't surprise me.

"During a recent press conference in Japan, Tri-Ace (in conjunction with Square Enix) have revealed that they will be remaking Star Ocean and Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PSP"

Tri-Ace is indeed involved with their production.

Tri-Ace is indeed involved with their production.
Who wrote that? The "Original version developed by tri-Ace Inc." right on the current official SO1&2 sites at Eternal Sphere (http://www.eternalsphere.com/) don't sound like they are all that involved in the remakes. Furthermore tri-Ace's products page (http://www.tri-ace.co.jp/product/) doesn't list them (neither TOSE's PSP port of VP) while SO4 is already listed...

The character design seems to be okay but what's really on my mind is the battle system. It is probably my favorite out of all the RPGs I've played. If they change that....I would be so pissed....

The battle system is the same as SO2.

As for Tri-Ace's involvement, I'm not so sure.   There were rumors leading that direction.

I saw this about SO4 and assumed it would include the psp versions.  As you've pointed out, it seems to be too early to tell, though

I love the battle system too, but I think the system from SO1 could use a few upgrades. You should be able to run around freely without having to hit a button, move the cursor to where you want to move, then hit the button again (no point in trying to avoid attacks if it takes that long.) Also, it takes too much time to fire off techs when you can't just press a single button to start targeting and fire the tech off. With Rati, it was just easier to keep attacking until the target was dead. If it just got updated to be a little more like the system from SO2, I think that would be awesome.

Title: Re: Star Ocean: to the cosmos.
Post by: Duke Fleed on September 23, 2007, 10:36:54 PM
Yeah man, I dunno what was up with the movement system in SO1.  It ended up making more sense just to mash the attack button.

The SO2 'overworld system' is being carried over to the SO1 remake.  I think I like it because it makes it easier to navigate.

I loved how you could execute a private action in a town, and then steal your own team mates' belongings.

The psp backdrops in the battle scenes add a nice touch also :)

Star Ocean (or Japanese games in general) are not known for using real names. When was the last time you saw anyone named Ronixis? Or Ratix? "Claude" is a common enough name that even the Japanese wouldn't mess it up Engrish-wise, especially since there are at least a few semi-major companies in Japan named that.

Bottom line is unless it's a crystal-clear Engrishification (e.g. Xanadu's "Assassin Bag" instead of "Assassin Bug") you don't get to change it, even if you don't like it. Lord knows I've had to go with a few names in the past I thought were really stupid but had a canon romanization. Mystic Ark was chock-full of them. :)

"Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reports that the Sony PSP's Star Ocean: First Departure - a refurbished version of the first Star Ocean game - will be released in Japan on December 27.

And the best part? Like Crisis Core, Star Ocean: First Departure will have its own PSP bundle, which means yet another limited edition PSP to collect (alright!)

Star Ocean: First Departure is only one of the two remakes produced by Square Enix for the PSP. The other game is Star Ocean: Second Evolution, which picks up the events of the second Star Ocean game. Definitely a must-have for fans of classic Square Enix RPG titles"

MAN...A limited edition PSP for Star Ocean? Man...I liked how the Crisis Core one looked, now it makes me curious to see the Star Ocean one...If things pull in at work I'll definitely import one. But on a side note..Tri-Ace is working on Infinite UNdiscovery.....A WTF name for a title, but the game looks interesting and helps add Japanese RPG gaming to the 360.

Title: STAR Ocean JP tv trailer 1
Post by: Duke Fleed on October 05, 2007, 08:05:42 PM
Attached is the first Trailer for the game.

http://www.badongo.com/file/4608246

"If you've been keeping tabs on the new Star Ocean series Square Enix has planned for the PSP, then you'll be pleased to know that the once teaser site for Star Ocean: First Departure has a few new additions since it first went live last month.

In addition to the native Fellpool characters already in the character profiles section, the technological advanced humans, namely Ronixis J. Kenny and Iria Silvestoli, have finally joined the list. You might also be interested to know that they've expanded the World section, which details the different areas in the game, spanning from the Earth Federation to the planet of Roak. Of course, the entire site is in Japanese but you can easily navigate through the English titled menus easily enough.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the first Star Ocean story, it traces the story of Ratix and his friends from the planet Roak. When a strange disease infests their planet, a pair of humans from the Earth Federation (Ronixis and Iria) arrive and tells the native Fellpools that an alien civilization has plans for the underdeveloped race.

For such a good game, it's sad to see that this game never got the recognition it deserved when it first came out on the Super Famicom. Now that the remake is well on its way for the PSP, new gamers and old fans alike can experience where the well-loved RPG series all began. Hopefully, we'll be seeing updates for Star Ocean: Second Evolution soon as well." -Charles Darwin.

You know, I've been thinking--it really should not be Felpool but Felpurr. I thought myself Felpool was fine for a long time, but then I fired up Wizardry 7 and realized that the cat-race of Star Ocean was an homage to the cat-race of Wizardry, the Felpurrs.

SO1 Update:

"...some of the characters revealed in this update include Eris and Joshua Jerand. They made their debut during the original title. He is some sort of a 'Red Mage' that can cast both healing and destructive spells.

The World section focuses on The Feather Folk (Joshua's home) while the updates on the System and New Elements menus reveals the changes to the RPG component of this game. We are definitely keeping an eye on this game and we can't wait to hear an official Western release announcement."

Degree of feeling - Kind of like a limit break, when a character dies, any other character in battle who has ties to that one will be thrown into a violent rage and see some serious stat boosts.

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't Claude and Crawd be pronounced almost the same way anyway?  Since the sound is actually somewhere between the L and R anyway.

Anyway, what do you mean by Ronixis looks like a fighter?  He doesn't exactly look like a mage in his SNES incarnation, either.

Actually yeah, kana-fied they'd be exactly the same thing. When I first saw the initial screenshots I thought it was Claude myself until I got the game and saw it written "Crawd" everywhere.

that type of thing doesn't really bother me; in the recent port of final fantasy tactics for this handheld, they renamed the Beoulve hero from 'Balbanes' 'Balbaneth.'  that's a whole additional syllable...

More or less, I don't approve of excessive "creative license" when it comes to translation. It smacks of unprofessionalism to me I guess. Smoothing over grammar, rewording sentences, or using equivalent slang to make prose flow better is all well and good, but saying "I don't like what the creators did with this game/book/whatever, I'm going to change it to something I like better" feels kind of irresponsible. It's a fuzzy line, but it kind of shows a lack of respect to the original media/creator's intentions I think.

Games aren't art or novels or "high-class" media or anything, but it's still important to try and respect the authors' original intentions as best you can, since a lot of work did go into them. Just my $0.02 though.

Now that i've got that out of my system, crawd is not an actual name for one thing. since R's and L's are mostly interchangable from what I understand, let's look at it this way:

CRAWD
CLAWD
CLAUDE

Seems like a logical progression anyway...
Say them out loud and see which one makes you feel silly.
