Title: Hardest games ever
Post by: Dsvaun on October 19, 2008, 12:42:29 AM
Recently I heard the Megaman 7 remix of Ghost N Goblins.  Along with it came memories of the HARDEST game ever.  I don't even think I beat the first stage.  What is a game you've played that was comparable(okay, bad word to use with this game) or at least difficult enough for you to suppress the memory of it?

I've finished I Wanna Be The Guy with no real issues and I never got frustrated.

Can't say I find there to be particularly many games that are difficult enough to discourage me from playin' 'em without some kind of stupid design flaws bein' involved.

Touhou. Probably 07 - Perfect Cherry Blossom. That whole series is insane.

Hard or Lunatic. I'm pretty damn good at arcade danmaku games, and most Touhou games can give me a run for my money on Normal mode.

RE: Arle

Hard. I could do very hard if I felt like it but I'm too occupied with other games now.

I would have to say Fester's Quest for the NES. If you die, you start over from the beginning. The only difference is that any bosses you beat stay gone.

I gotta say, Gaiares for the Genesis is pretty friggin difficult, even if you cheat and use the T-BRASTER. The third level is damn near impossible without precise pinpoint perfection at dodging traps. Having the best weapon in the game is meaningless when the level itself is what kills you.

And while I'm on the subject of Genesis shumps, Thunder Force. Enough said.

Mmmm, Gaiares.

...

Third level is the one with all the satellites at the beginning, right?

That's the second level. Third one is the hyperspace looking one.

I've actually gotten better at that game over the years. I used to just be able to count the number of times I even got THAT far on one hand.

In the shmup genre, I'd say Radio Zonde and it's sequel, Hellsinker, are the hardest I've played. In Radio Zonde, the last boss is so inasane that you'll need every one of your infinite lives to beat her.

In other stuff, um... I'd say Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, because Nintendo seems to have forgotten the definition of the words "control scheme," and instead made the game control entirely with the stylus. This is equivalent to playing Zelda with a mouse.

I found Actraiser as one of the hardest games that I've played. It's still great, just tough.

Actraiser. Where God getting his ass kicked is merely the start of the adventure.

I nominate Tempest 2000.
Partially in hopes of encouraging more Tempest love.

Tempest 2000 was pretty great, I remember it. Not one of my favorites, but still definitely lots of fun.

Almost, but not quite. In Diablo, you merely had to click on an enemy to attack them.
In Z:PH, you have to make a slashing motion across them, which would be fine if it weren't for the fact that the touchscreen recognition sucks (and no, it's not my calibration) and you usually end up running into the enemy as a result.

On that note, I'd consider Phantom Hourglass worse than Diablo.

This Hacker 9 game link to in another topic on the board is probably rating pretty high up there right now.=>_<=  Especially because you start out so mal-equipped for the task...

Also of worthy note would be Popful Mail and Eternal Daughter (I think that was the name of it... )

ED ain't that hard, but the Final boss is unbearabley cheap.

Hack9 gets MUCH easier when you get a few HP Sources down, and start racking up good equipment from the enemy drops.

That's what it seemed like.  I'm just having alot of trouble getting to that point, heh.

All enemies have the same chance of dropping money (except those special few who drop their item 100%), so just slaughtering the fish in the first room is as good a way of racking up cash as anything else. Or find a nice area with lots of blocks and a door in easy reach and farm there.

The journey you make here is pretty darn cool, even adjusting for the "Look, Ma, I'm reading Nihongo! Whee!" factor.  And the music is sweet.

God Hand is absolutely brutal and ruthless, where even the common mooks' style is impetuous, their technique unstoppable. Your health bar is merely a distraction, because if it ever moves downward, you're in serious, serious trouble.

That's how it starts out. By the end of the game, the brutality reaches ridiculous proportions. Yet it never feels cheap. It feels entirely beatable even with the default skills, health and god roulette specials. It just shows you that you're not up to the task yet, which can be really humiliating. If you DO manage to get toward the end, it makes you feel like you're Alexander the Great. Then drops four of the hardest mooks into the tiny room with you and laughs sadistically as you're pummeled into jelly.

Did I mention it has a stage called "Giant Enemy Crab Tank?" Or that you can bet on poisonous chihuahua races? Did I mention it has poisonous chihuahuas?

It's the damned Earthbound of the Beat-Em-Up genre. And probably the only game that I put so much effort into winning that I was actually sweating buckets and getting incredibly painful cramps in my hands and wrists.

Clover made it; they did Okami and Viewtiful Joe. It's a huge care package for fans of difficult games and beat'em'ups.

And then Capcom shut down Clover.
Probably because everyone left.

But... Viewtiful Joe wasn't developed by Clover.
Well, not the original. The PS2 port was, as were the sequels.

Which, ultimately, gets to the silliness of this.
The VJ games WERE all developed by the same people, just under different labels.

As was the Phoenix Wright trilogy. And the Resident Evil series, the first Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, ...
Hell, most of Capcom's notable games for the past decade (and PN03!) came out of people that went to Clover, then left that to get out from under Capcom's thumb totally.

Clover was formed to give their big names more creative freedom than they had working directly for Capcom. And when Capcom started applying pressure to Clover, everyone took off and formed SEEDS. And SEEDS merged with someone else to become PlatinumGames.
Look for more of the fine games you've come to know and love under the PlatinumGames label.

It's sad that Capcom had to create a subsidiary company to let their people make good games. Even sadder that they FAILED at it.

Mad World (and God Hand, really) were never my kind of thing, but... ye gods, I can't *wait* for Infinite Space (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/nds/infiniteline/infiniteline.html).  Because I'm expecting Star Control 2 the Sequel, and I won't get it, and so I'll be disappointed... but until then, glee!

Well, you guys have me beaten out quite soundly.  I Wanna Be The Guy was a fair pain in the rear, for instance.

I don't know, I'm thinking the original Contra.  Sure, it's beatable, but your sprite is freaking huge, and it doesn't have the super-easy mode 7 levels of the third one.

FIre Emblem Thracia 776 I also found challenging; not only does it not pull any punches, I found the hit and miss chances to be fairly erratic (missing fairly consistently with 95 chance, getting hit twice in a row with 13 chance, etc.), and your unit stats are nothing short of retarded.  Capturing was essential, and it was also a total crapshoot.

However the hardest game in existence is Left 4 Dead on expert without any teammates

Ah, right. But then ammo is not a concern, which would be the big problem otherwise. (Tank comes, ammo gets wasted, provided survival, horde comes, no ammo, phail.)

Let's not forget that get hit by a hunter at all (which usually happens after being blinded by a boomer anyways) is instant game over.

I still think this is technically possible (for the sole reason that you can molotov a tank and run) but it's hard enough as it is with four people, and if you're ever put into yellow you're probably dead

Anyone ever heard of a little gem called X-COM: UFO Defense (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown)? It's a strategy game where you build bases and shoot down UFO's, then land soldiers at the crash sites. You also respond to terror sites, attack enemy bases, research their technology, and eventually build a spaceship and assualt the aliens' home on Mars.

The UFOs come in plenty of shapes and sizes, from one-man saucers to massive Battleships that can blow planes out of the sky before they can shoot back. The aliens are equally varied - there's your ever-present gray Sectoids, thick-skinned Mutons, psionic Ethereals, and the nightmare-inducing Chryssalids (any X-COM forum will probably have tons of horror stories involving them).

You'll shake as your transport nears the crashed UFO. You'll sweat as you explore a terror site at night. You'll jump when that Cyberdisc snipes your favorite Squaddie from someplace you've already cleared. And you'll practically scream "O SHI-" as you see that ever-present black monster running towards your Skyranger, cursing your lack of Time Units, and it's almost as if you can hear it saying, "raep raep raep".

It will have its way with you. Repeatedly. And you'll love every minute of it.

I second X-COM. I never got anywhere, even on the easiest difficulty. Terror sites are total nightmares. The weakest alien in the game can frequently one hit kill you.

And then, after two fights, they raided my base and murdered me with fly-by wire rocket-launcher things. Grr.

How about X-Wing?

The original floppy version. Several of the later stages were totally reworked for the CD-ROM edition to make the difficulty less absurdly high.

Title: Re: Hardest games ever
Post by: Shadow on January 20, 2009, 08:36:17 AM
I third X-COM. In the beginning, any alien can potentially instakill you with one shot. Sectoids are the weakest ones but only in resistance to damage. Everyone and their mother carry plasma rifles, be it a Sectoid, Muton or Ethereal.

The game's manageable with occasional saving & reloading until the aliens start torturing you with psionics. At that point, no tactics can prevent a soldier from going nuts or, in the worst case scenario, fire his rocket launcher before the team leaves the Skyranger.

Still, one of the best games ever. :D

Ye know, I've heard a good number of stories about the greatness of X-Com, but I've only seen a few screenshots of it.  Anyone mind filin' me in on the basics?  Ye know, play method, notable points, etc.

I'm not sure if there's much in the way of screenshots, but the UFOpaedia (http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page) is probably one of the largest resources for information on the series. Seeing what the game looks like might be better reserved for a Let's Play on YouTube.
