My 3 cents:

1) I'm really curious about how the gameplay goes -- the sort of rock/paper/scissors/dynamite/plasteel/plasma-cutter dynamic they have going.... What's the flow of combat like?

2) How does the whole "interacting with others" thing play in to it? Do you have to slave away for hours making a group that dissolves in 15 minutes a la FF11? Do you even *need* others to advance, or is it more self-reliant given that you have demon allies (a la FF12)?

3) Plot?

But certainly, rest up :-)

How do demons join you, exactly? Do you capture, convince them?

Got a 4shared account so I'll be sharing some screenies. :P
I just hope it lives up to the hype.

1. Well, the combat is similar to that of Mabinogi, if ye've played that. It goes kind of like this, attacks have a certain... Polarity, for lack of a better word.

A basic run up and hit somehin' move is just called "Attack". "Attacks" are comboable up to three hits.

A "charged" attack that's (Usually) one strong hit is called a Rush.

A defensive stance is called a Guard. One can walk (Not run) while guardin'.

A Counter Stance is called.. Well.. Guess. One is restricted to stand in one spot while in a Counter Stance, holdin' the stance consumes MP at a gradual rate.

A melee AoE skill is called a Spin. Spins are dependant on weapon length. (AKA Swords good, Knives bad)

Dodge skills are somethin' not to be found in Mabinogi. A dodge skill will at it's basic level, always avoid shots and rapids

Shot types are basically single attacks with a firearm. (Bullets ARE consumed, however the prices seem mostly reasonable)

Rapid Attacks are basically to Shot what Rush is to Attack. It's a burst fire that (Again at the basic level) fires three shots at once.

Spells and the like fall under the shot catergory, for the most part.

So, how it breaks down is this.

Attack beats Idle, Rush and Dodge

Guard beats Attack (Have not tested to see if it works against shot. More spadin' is required. However, in Mabinogi, it DOES work against ranged attacks, same with Spin)

Rush beats Idle, Guard and Dodge.

Counter beats Attack and Rush.

Spin beats Idle, Counter and Rush. It's also good if one is surrounded.

As said, Dodge beats Shots and Rapids.

Shot beats Idle, Attack, Rush, Spin and Counter. However, for the first three one must stand far enough away as the shot has to be "Aimed" first. (Aimin' is reprisented by a little blue bar that slowly extends)

Rapid is the same as Shot, with the bonus of beated Defense (If Mabinogi is to be believed... I THINK. Also on the subject of Mabinogi, if it's the same, Rapid's Aim Bar starts lower and fills up slower)

And Idle beats Counter.  :P

So how it breaks down in an actual fight is that if the target is idle, if one is melee, one would want to start off with an attack combo. They'll get knocked back, recover and then come on ye in a matter of ways. If it's a basic attack, it'd be wise to Guard as one can walk back a bit to gain some distance and delay the time the hit will land. The target will hit yer Guard for laughabley low damage (Usually 1) and it's combo will be broken. At this point, ye'd go over and combo it again. If this happens, it's best advised to utilize a Counter for the next, even if it's just another attack. Reason bein', after a successful Guard/Counter (Maybe Dodge) it has to "Reload" usually only takes a couple seconds, but yer target will be on ye by the time it finishes.

Now then, if the target goes to Rush at ye (Reprisented by a red battle aura) then the best courses of action are dependant on how far ye are. If they're close, just combo them. If they're far, counter them. (Or shot them)

If the oppnent readies a defensive stance, there's three options. Use a Rush and break their guard, wait it out, have a friend help out and one plays decoy and hits the guard while the other wails on the target (This will cause Aggro confusion,  however)

If the opponent readies a counter, one would be best advise to get close and Spin them or hang back and shot/rapid.

A Dodge is best countered with Attack, Rush or Spin. They don't drain MP (That I saw) so waitin' it out can lead to a stalemate if ye're a shooter unless the AI fouls up or there's more then one aggresor on either side (In which case, shoot the other guy for the sake of ****)

The same basically applies for Shots and Rapids, with the exception of them bein' ranged and takin' longer to execute. I don't deal with FireArms, so I don't know too much. However, I'm doin' the Mage thing so I'm certain I'll have to deal with dodge whores sooner or later.

Anyway, weapons and spells (As well as demon abilities) follow the basic attack type rules and MegaTen's own little property system. Slash, Blunt, somethin' called "Charge" which I'm assumin' is pierce for physicals. Spells and some demon skills will instead use Fire (Agi) Ice (Bufu) Electricity (Zio) Force (Zan) or Almighty (Megido). So say some fool is tricked out in Slash resist armor, it'd be wiser to attack with a Blunt or a "Charge". Another example is Jack Frost isn't gonna be bothered by Bufu, but Agi will give 'em some trouble.

Anyway my brain wants to stop typin' about that and I'm basically done anyway.

2. I wouldn't know, my friends are either still downloadin' their clients or have been sleepin'.

3. Haven't gotten too far. It opens up in a little introsequence of ye hangin' around with some high ranked "Demon Buster" (Hence, DB) that I think might be gender dependant (For my female character, the DB was female, however it might be a male for a male) talkin' about how Second Home (Home II) has been invaded by demons and since ye and her are the closest by coincidence (How convenient) that even though ye haven't been trained, the two of ye have to investigate it.  There's also some other business about the shinjukuu Babel which is some tower that was built for arbitrary plot reasons and shortly after it's completion, Demons began to return from the Great Flood (See: SMT). That's about all the plot stuffs that's not spoilerous and I can actually recall.

How do demons join you, exactly? Do you capture, convince them?

Negotiation skills. Ye have three basic skills at the outset: Greeting (Friendly) Taunt (Funky) Threaten (Intimidate). Much like the series has been known to do, sometimes they'll just leave, sometimes they'll give ye stuff, sometimes they'll offer to make a contract with ye (Read: join) while other times they'll stop listenin' or attack ye. More Negotiation Skills are available down their respective branches.

The stated system requirements I've seen have been, shall we say, contradictory, often with the minimum CPU requirements being higher than the recommended.

Can you give me an estimate of how well the game would run on an AMD Sempron 1.6 GHZ processor (my video card is on the high end so don't worry about it)?

I won't start, but at that I'm scarcely the stopping sort.

I'll ask the obvious question, then. Would ye say the game is enjoyable?

I have a GeForce 7300 LE (loser edition), and I run the game at full everything with no slowdowns and or lag, Tough maybe your processing power could give you probs, but if you run the game alone you should be fine.

I played for a good 6 hours yesterday and I gotta say...

I dont know if its a good game... If we go tru the idea that its a mmorpg then it falls under the "has been done" but it is well balanced and fun.  On the MEGATEN side... I have only done like 5 quests (3 of them main story) and they had their own good share of mistery and they Directly follow the story from the first 2 Shin Megami's, We are told that after the hero saved the world (good or bad or whatever they are nice enough to leave it open) humans go undeground and make shelters (heh Fallout...) and start makin friends with demons.. Tough one day humans atart makin their biblical towers and demons make a new one too and "Humans vs Demons" starts over again.
And ill stop right there...Its sad that we cant invite friends or anyone to play the game but you can guys try signing up in the beta and see if you get an invitation. Then get yerselves spoiled.

Well, in it's favor, it's got the whole classic MegaTen thing goin' on. In addition, the music for the most part is souped up mixes straight out of SMT2 and is honestly the best I've heard in an MMO. Combat stuffs are largely rather balanced and let's face it, goin' out to fight stuffs with buddies is always a riot. Another good point is that the Vattican Brand(TM) censor is nowhere to be found (Anyone whom played Mabinogi or Gunbound will know what I'm talkin' about). The last positive point I can think of is that one can issue commands to one's own demon without any real difficulty (Read F1-F8) or if one pleases, take complete control of the demon with Tab so one can move the demon around and target specifically with the demon.

Goin' against it, I'm not the biggest fan of the controls, it will eventually most likely fall into the "Grind-fest" dilemma and what I've seen of the visuals, there's a good amount of brown when outside. (However, the one dungeon I was in had a rather snazzy look to it, not bad for an RGD Instance)

A debateable point is a complete and total lack of PVP. While this means that there's no way for jerkasses to advertize their E-Peen about how badly they kicked the low levels around, it also means that said dumbasshole (when they DO arise) will not be smitable. Also, just friendly competition isn't possible, either. I HAVE however heard rumors of Demon Vs. Demon PvP.

Another point that's gonna be decided by how much one likes the sort of thing is that Demons level and do indeed learn skills. Fused demons do inherit said skills, so this means that if one wants a demon that has one skill or another, one will have to raise a demon up somewhere along in the chain for the demon to have said ability, as opposed to the SMT/2 method of static demon levels with their "Get 'em and mix 'em" ability. On the upshot, this does allow for some rather dandy mixin' comboes.

Personally, I'm largely enjoyin' myself so far. I'm not exactly a stranger to the MMO genre, so I know what to expect for the most part and am able to ignore some of the flaws (BUt the control issues piss me off each time) so anyone else's milage may vary.

Seems that grinding up demons may prove more important than grinding up your character... which makes me think of Nocturne a little.  A Nocturne MMO with demonic gladiatorial combat against your friends... sounds nice.

Q) IIRC, this one follows the free-to-play, pay-for-stuff approach; how gamebreaking is the stuff you can buy with realcash, or (on the flipside) how hosed wouldja be if you're a cheapskate?

Do note, the rumors of DvD is apparently really old and nothin' has come of it yet.

Anyway, cash shop stuff isn't available for the CB. However, other then some expanded storage and demon storage slots, I haven't seen a whole lot in the "You need this" market.
Hell, there's even hair styles and dyes available without goin' Cash-shop. So unless they start sellin' pieces of gear or over-powered consumables, I don't think it will be too problematic.

Also, the Noctune Demon designs are used.

Fair enough, but I'd think it wouldn't be a stretch; most MMOs have some manner of PvP somewhere down the line.  I can easily see things going full-circle and having a pokemon-style league start up in Imagine :-)

expanded storage and demon storage slots
Meaning spare inventory and extra room to store non-active demons? Hm.   How harsh are the base limits on those?

50 slots of free storage, 0 slots of demon storage.  One can hold 6 demons on-hand at once. Each "Rental" slot for both kinds holds 50 and are rentable for 30, 60 and 90 day periods.

Only one, the Cerberus Server, for now.

I'm always on Channel 8, so anyone wishin' to run into my magical self had best align themselves accourdin'ly.

Also, Gratz.

And one last play tip for anyone playin'. Don't use the wounded Cerberus, it leaves.

Really now! I better join in, if I can. I think my intel integrated junk won't run it, though. It'll hardly (barely, if at all) run something like Mabinogi. Worth a shot though.

Arle had me sold on this when it was mentioned that the music consists of SMT II remixes. (Truth be known: liked SMT I's OST better, but I take what I can get.)

I played a few hours last night, got some demons in hand and signed up for the first dungeon.  The combat system is really active and lots of fun!  A bit like FF12, except you have defensive moves to use while your attacks recover, so you're not standing there like an idiot while the baddies whomp on you.

Arle, could you please expound a bit as to what the cultural distinctions among the channels are?  I was hopping around a bit due to disconnects (crappy hotel wifi) and it seems some have more people selling, some have more lag, some have more high-level people, and some are practically devoid of other players (leading to areas with like 30 pixies and kodamas floating around).  Which channel's what, in your informed opinion?

[edit]
Also, what resources are people using? The english wikis are sorely lacking in thorough data, but for what it's worth I compiled this list of variously informative sites:

Japanese:
http://imagine.gkwiki.com/ <= big and thorough
http://wikiwiki.jp/imagine/
http://ahirukumi.thick.jp/imagine/
http://artifact.sakura.ne.jp/imagine/ <= awesome fusion calculator over here

English:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Megami_Tensei_Online:_IMAGINE
http://dbdb.digitaldevildb.com/wiki/index.php?title=DBDB:Megami_Tensei_IMAGINE_inter-klan_mainframe
http://mto.diabolicalsys.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
http://www.mymmogames.net/wiki/index.php/Megaten:Content

Any good ones I'm missing?

Well, i'm hardly informed on the matter. More like highly biased without factual basis.

However, my general experiences leads that the first channel is always the busiest, usually containin' all the power-players, major guilds, noobs, morons and assholes.

The second channel has the content of the first, but with less traffic.

The interumn channels (three to six) tend to be kind of a duldrum.

The Last (Eight) is where people go to avoid large crowds and is generally filled with more intelligent forms of life.

The second to last (Seven) is to the last as the second is to the first.

Again, I have no factual evidence in regards to MegaTen to back this up, but that's been my general experience with MMOs by and large.

I just said to play Channel 8 because that's where I always go to.

Post by: Speaker59 on December 12, 2008, 09:55:26 AM
Thanks, Arle, that actually makes a lot of sense.  So, if I'm hunting mobs and don't want competition, stick to Channel 5; if I want to interact with strangers and don't mind people-lag, head up to 7; if I want to try to hang out with youse people go to 8.

I'm nearly lv. 12 now, with a lv 10 Pixie. Just finished clawing my way through the Suginami Demon Tunnels solo for the first time.  Building up as a SPEED/luck gunner, and still trying to get the hang of everything, but part of my lack of success (killed by the boss of that place ~4 times before I downed it...) is definitely due to the awful effect lag has on the combat... especially weak hotel wifi lag.

Now I'm browsing around my fusion options, which is just as wonderfully agonizing a choice as it always should be.  Perhaps even moreso now that -- and please correct me if I'm wrong -- demons no longer evolve and can instead be leveled up to 99, gaining skills along the way which vary even with the type of (for example) Hua Po you're raising! Gah.  The standard choice of "fuse them for what you can use now" vs. "go level up so you can hold higher-level demons" now has the Nocturne-style added complexity of "or, level up your component critters so they get more skills".... And then there's the new "raise the average level of the demons you're fusing so you get the next higher result demon" option, too, which might make leveling for a skill impractical.... SO much to consider!

This is made rather worse by the fact that nobody has an English chart of all the various monster sub-species' skill growth patterns, which sends me back to the main Japanese wiki (http://imagine.gkwiki.com/101.html).

On THAT note, you're a bunch of intelligent-type peopleses; if one would want to start a wiki for this, where would you recommend?  I'm thinking the main requirements would be:
1) hosted somewhere free, very preferably with no ads
2) allow user accounts as well as anonymous editing, preferably with the anon edits getting highlighted to admin-types to more easily spot vandalism without discouraging useful passerby contributions,
3) Japanese support, to be able to contain proper references to all the relevant Japanesey things
4) fast plaintext editing a must, and if there IS WYSIWYG editing it should not spill buckets of nbsps and such into the wiki-text.  It'd be nice to have some kind of quick on-the-spot touch-up edit feature that doesn't require opening the whole page and re-finding the place your error's in, but that's hardly a requirement.  But WetPaint (http://shiren.wetpaint.com/) is way too slow and cumbersome.

So, yeah... thoughts?

[edit]
After a bit of research, WikiSpot (http://wikispot.org/) looks pretty darn good.  You can even double-click to edit in-place!> Japanese support, both logins and anonymous access, it's looking pretty solid so far.  C'mon over (http://blacksmithing.wikispot.org/) and help out!

I believe I'm either 22 or 23.  Friend me if you need help - I played when it was still in Japanese so I've got a pretty good grasp on the game's flow, and as well I've got a lot of spare money as I've got all the equipment I actually want.

I meant to say http://imagine.wikispot.org/

I've got a flight today, and then a week of likely-entirely-offline vacation, so I won't be able to edit things till I get back. I'll try to get started on translating the data on the various demons... I aim for a thorough English compendium to be the first hallmark feature of this wiki. Like, all the detail on the gkwiki, but in English.

As I thought: the dungeons run very well. The towns run terribly. Outside runs rather bad. Very hard to play as commands don't always go through, but I'm patient..

It's quite fun so far. I made a dumb move and turned my good pixie into a bad angel. She hates me, and thus never does anything intelligent. Combined with horrible FPS, it makes it a real struggle to use her effectively. Still...

I love it so far, thanksh a ton for the topic, Arle, and to Gid and others for telling me I can get in right now. :D

I'm level 18 and I snuck into B1 of Shinjuku Babel. What a horrifyingly varied place. Got ambushed by Ruler of Shinjuku - Tarrasque. That was very bad.

I've left a strange impression wherever I fight, as I'm wearing  camo pants, dreamrock armor, a cool fedora and glasses. Wielding a giant hammer, screaming the lyrics to Motorheads "The Hammer."

Speaking of which, anyone have pictures of their characters?

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3100/smtihammeriscomingdownnd4.png
"Don't even run, don't try to hide, believe me, the hammer's gonna make you die!"

Sure, it's not the most functional of armor. But it leaves an impression. Dissonance, possibly.

I'm trying to figure out if the pixie has any redeemable qualities. As far as I can see, Hua Po does everything and more than the pixie, only the pixie has a weak physical attack and guard/counter. Hua Po gets offensive magic and "Kind of Healer" which doubles her healing power.

There's gotta be a reward for leveling up a pixie...

Nice! That'll redeem her a bit. The Kiss Throw is handy but whenever something turns their attention to her, she's pretty much a goner. Still, must be better than a Hua Po, without like, any physical defenses whatsoever.

Wow. That really DOES leave an impression.

A good one? :D

Not bad. That's a great deal longer than I figured. It seems like that if you want a really good demon, you're going to have to fuse them and get the 'perfect' skill set for whatever you're after. The game is clever though, because defense from standard threats alone would be half your skill bar... sacrifices will have to be made.

Also, Fire Breath is several thousand times more useful than "Spin." I want a Demon-Buster version of it.

mind you I was level 16 when we did Gray and 17/18 on silver my poor Datsue-Ba did her best but it wasn't enough I had to call out Nozuchi to take on the boss it's self

god I cant wait till I get to lvl 28 so I can get Setanta

Last night my typical traveling companion was absent, so I just wandered around aimlessly. I explored Ichiguya, south of Shinjuku, and got a Harpy and High Pixie. Failed to get a knocker, though. I also checked out both dungeons there; pretty cool stuff.

Then I went east, and I forgot the name of that place. Where the ICBM hit, is all I remember. Kind of boring, but it was a lot more open than other areas, so it was a good exploration experience. No new demons, though I did fight some really neat things.

I went further east to Ueno, and only just got in. So far, no new demons yet, but I suspect I'll find the Gaian Church here. It's a fun looking desert environment with a home point with charged access by a Gaian fellow. Gotta peek around some more.

Current thoughts:
Why do I have to babysit my demons? Half the time they sit there doing nothing, even the ones that are "Open Hearts" with me. The rest of the time they're stuck in Defend/Counter and don't break from it.

High Pixie: Nice weather, isn't it? -- said while inside a quartz cave. Er, yeah, guess it kinda was. Crazy pixies.

Mirror Inugami are the most ridiculously hate-able enemies I've ever seen. All the hatefulness of Inugami, now with spell reflection. I wonder if it keeps that trait when contracted...?

Nothing can't be solved by attacking en masse.

Lastly, I'm level 18 I believe, and it takes ages to get any stronger. This isn't cool; in two levels I could ride that Nimble Cerberus that mysteriously appeared in my COMP.

That was inherited from Mabinogi, I think. When I gave that game a test drive, getting my character deleted took a silly amount of time.

Not sure what to make of a character if I keep playing from here. Melee + Curative was kind of dull. I'd like Melee + Ranged (like the SMT 1 and SMT 2 heroes) but is that even plausible? That's a lot of skills to work on.

I'd expect that since they have a Mage/Melee Chain Expertise going with Demon-Slaying Fist / Destruction Dash, and a Gunner/Mage CE with Magic Bullet, there oughta be a Melee/Guner CE forthcoming eventually. *shrug*

I'm EchoNull on there, roving the channels at random.

I really like the active, complex, yet still vaguely turn-based combat system.... It's like FF12 crossed with Kuzuhoha Raidou crossed with the RPS aspect of Mabinogi (as mentioned).

And I like the plot!  I'm just a bit scared of running out of it, but then I only managed to ~Act 5 in my CB time... so this oughta last me a while anyway, and free SMT is good SMT :-D

Having just finished the last current act, slightly disappointed at the lack of closure. Moreso at the lack of additional COMP slots. But I will give it credit for hooking me onto this MMOrperger madness. Next thing you know I'll be buying one (*shudder*).

Still on fairly often, still as 555JOS if anyone wants help or something.
