Title: Release News ~ Merry Christmas - SRW Alpha Gaiden
Post by: Gideon Zhi on December 26, 2008, 01:30:23 AM
Yep. There´s not much else to say at this point, other than that this is a basically untested beta patch. Also, I´m really sorry for taking so long with this. Because it´s basically an untested beta patch, we ran into some crippling last-minute issues, first with the patch not properly replacing the game´s executable and thus leaving the asm hacks out of the resultant disc image, and second with the Premium Box version of the game just not working at all. Both issues have hopefully been resolved! Note that the patch was developed based on the original release of the game, so patching the Premium Box release has been tested even LESS. But it should work, fingers crossed.

Huge, huge thanks out to Excellen (Chrissy on some boards, Hokuto on others) for her extra-hard work over the last four years translating this game´s mammoth 3+ megabyte script. Thanks also to SilverSonic, whose initial (sadly failed) attempts at translating the script got the project on its feet in the first place! Thanks as well to everyone else mentioned in the readme who contributed to the project, and to Masaki and Iriliane from our IRC channel for performing some last-minute grunt testing on the Premium Box version of the game.

Well, I think that about covers it. Enjoy the game, everyone!

I was really hoping it was Megaten too.

Hey Gideon, the readme says that the only 2 versions of the game are SLPS 31.47 and SLPS 35.77, but I am looking at a copy of it somewhere where it has it listed as SLPS 31.48.  Is that a typo on someone elses part, or is  there a 3rd version which the patch won't work with? I'm assuming the former, but figured best to be sure.

Title: Re: Release News ~ Merry Christmas - SRW Alpha Gaiden

I am aware of three different releases of the game: the original, PSOne Books, and Premium Box. Of these I only had access to the original and the Premium Box versions; it's very possible that 031.48 is PSOne Books. I can't promise that 031.48 is supported at the moment, however trivial it may be to add support for it.

Can someone upload the actual SLPS_031.48 file somewhere? I don't need the full ISO, just that one file.

gratz on Alpha Gaiden. first off this really isn't a patch issue (mainly cause the patch won't download and work right) first off how big is the patch suposed to be?

For those of you with certain... desires:

You're going to have to rehack a BS and Funds code, the translation renders the old ones useless.
Voices don't work in ePSXe 1.7.0 as far as I can tell. My PSX is dead, so I can't use that.

Yeah, but the cheating interface for pSX can be unwieldly at times, especially for code making. And last time I tried to run it in pSX I had the same problem.

I tell a lie. I actually also need the SYSTEM.CNF file, and possibly the entire contents of the OVL directory. Unsure on that last point, though; depends heavily on whether the SLPS differs from either of the other versions.

But I'm not looking at it tonight. It's 3AM on the day after Christmas, I've been working on this crap since I got home from my grandparents at 6:30PM, I'm exhausted and I need sleep.

About my luck to have the 31.48 copy. Ah, well...whee! Robots and violence....temporarily out of reach. :p

Might want to give the readme's index a second look ("about shin megami tensei," "4.1 - the game that hates emulators"...).

I also have the 31.48 CD.  After creating the bin/cue file with ImgBurn, I was able to get it to work with the normal patch (i.e. 31.47 patch) by doing the following:

1) Rename PATCHFILES\SLPS_031.47 to PATCHFILES\SLPS_031.48

2) Open srwag.lua and edit the line

slusdirent = cdutil:findpath "/SLPS_031.47;1" or error "This is not a SuperRobotWarAlphaGaiden Japanese CD."

to instead read

slusdirent = cdutil:findpath "/SLPS_031.48;1" or error "This is not a SuperRobotWarAlphaGaiden Japanese CD."

3) edit the line

  { ["name"] = "SLPS_031.47", ["file"] = "PATCHFILES\\SLPS_031.47" },

to instead read

  { ["name"] = "SLPS_031.48", ["file"] = "PATCHFILES\\SLPS_031.48" },

4) open PATCHFILES\SYSTEM_031.CNF and edit the line:

BOOT = cdrom:SLPS_031.47;1

to instead read

BOOT = cdrom:SLPS_031.48;1

5) Run normal.bat, and enjoy the goodness that is AGTP.

Thanks so much Gid.  I wish I were able to help with this, real-life slaps you around like a lil ***** sometimes, I'm still trying to hold on!

Also, using epsxe 1.70 I am able to hear the Voice Acting.  Not sure why it wasn't working for Isao.

make sure the bin and cue files are inside the "ALPHA GAIDEN ENGLISH" folder and both have been renamed srwag.bin and srwag.cue respectively.  the error means it can't find the bin and cue files...least that's what it was when I got that error

From what I could gather, there are four actually:
- Original Version (SLPS03148)
- Limited Edition (SLPS03147)
- PSOne Books (SLPS91506)
- Premium Box (?)

The original version and the limited edition were released at the same time, so they're probably identical except from game IDs.

Now to wait another year or two for the fixes, considering I can't hear the XA sounds on the patched copy, even though I could on the original.

For anyone who has a problem with the cd-tool crashing... just download cd-tool-20080312-win32.zip from the directory(there is a link in Gid's readme). just copy the updated cd-tool to the patch folder and it'll stop crashing. I think this only happens to people running vista but I'm not sure. anyway I'm about to see how it runs on my psp. Thanks for all the great patches Gideon!

I also notice the voice isn't there in the game like the theme song in title menu and also when they are in battle, they don't shout out their moves.  I have the 031.48 and follow the guide posted by evilgouki and after created iso, I changed it to psp format and played on psp.

The game runs fine but there isn't voice. The background music plays fine tho.  I notice someone posted this problem earlier in the thread.  Anyone else have the voice and opening theme song working?

did you try just replacing the cd tool with the 08 version? i didnt update anything else, I left the lua files alone. It should still be the 2004 version for the lua... if thats not what will make it run then idk.

I just grabbed the 1.4.2 from maxconsole and converted my game again and now voice and everything works. Yay.  Did exactly what I did with the 0.7 version before but this version supposely support cdda.

I'm not sure why yours is failing. Maybe try to re-rip iso and patch it again.

I found a minor bug with the memory card.
If you load a blank (not formatted) memory card or a card image (like the pSX does by default) the game asks you to format the card and the purple/pink selection box in the formatting dialog is off.

Here it should be on "Yes"

Here it should be on "No"

Edit:
During intermission thers a diffrent bug with the formatting dialog. The selection box is fine, but "memory Card" is in japanese.

EPSXe has always had some issues with voices, depending on the plugins used.  For instance, playing the first Resident Evil, I had to use the default CD plugin for the voices to not get cut.  Its just picky like that sometimes.

You can give psX a try in order to see if its the game itself, or just EPSXe being picky.

I'm running vista (not sure exct version on my laptop but it is a 64 bit version) and was able to patch just fine.  I had to use evilgouki's method because I have the 031.48 copy.  the only issue i had was because I was half asleep and didn't notice one of the lines modified needed to instances of 031.47 replaced and I only replaced the first one so it would crash with a lua error until I went back and corrected my mistake.

Hmmm...I cant get the voices to work either. I've tried with Epsxe 1.7.0 and the Eternal sound plugin V 1.41, and  the other emulator as well, PSX, version 1.13.

Not sure whats goin on lol, im sure its not related to the patch, because the unpatched versions dont have voices either. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks

P.S: Im running version 47 of the game by the way.

Just like some of you guys, I don't have any voices either.  I knew something was wrong when I just started playing.  However, I think one mistake by my part was that my original image file was a .MDF (without an .MDS).  I was successful converting it to a .BIN and .CUE, but without voices.  Maybe some of you guys did what I did?

EDIT: The original RIP might have something to do with it, I noticed my .MDF in ePSXe 1.7 doesn't seem to have voices.

That might be, because it didnt have voices in either emulator for me. But then again, I just made an ISO from my original disc to patch it, and i didnt have voices then with either emulator either with the original cd or the ISO from it.

Hello! This is my first post and I love this forum but this is not why I am here for(yet).

Now I have an ISO for Alpha Gaiden(the 48 version) and Im trying to apply the patch but CD Tool seems to be having problems. I dont know how to deal with this because I dont have much knowledge with patching ISOs or how to use CD tool. Can anyone help me? The assistance is apprieciated!

I changed my rip now to a .BIN and it all works fine now (voices I mean).  I guess a lot of the voice problems seem to come from the original RIP and converting that RIP doesn't seem to solve problems.

As to the .48 problem, I believe there's a post on page 2.  When he mentions opening a file, use notepad.  I followed it exactly and everything works fine now.

EDIT: Even for a BETA, I'm loving.  Much much much thanks and grats.

i think you are right because i did the same thing and burned a copy without the patch applied (it was a mistake) and now that i tested it it misses voices too

I seem to have a problem different from everyone else here.  I patched the game successfully and when I play I can get to the main menu and even load saves from before I patched it but if I try to start a new game it just sits on a black screen.  I even tried the unpatched version again and it had no problems with the intro and several unsuccessful attempts at repatching.

Some info would help on your setup then. What emulator and version of that emulator are you using? What is your computer's processor and graphics card model?

Hopefully that will shed some light on possible causes.

Also, I am assuming that you followed the directions carefully when patching, making sure all files are in the same directory, in the correct format, and named correctly?

Several versions of ePSXe (1.4, 1.6, 1,7), and PSx 1.13.  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, AMD Athlon 64 X2.  I made a point of following the steps in the readme and on page 2 (I have the PSOne books version).  I've run out of ideas for what else to try.  Maybe I have to wait until a new patch comes out that includes the PSOne books version but I'm hoping there is something I'm missing to get around the problem.

hi guys! I was succesful in patching the game but i had the same problem of the missing battle voices and i was wondering what might have caused it... i was wondering if there is a possibility that the once who was able to make it work(battle voices) could perhaps create a torrent of it or something and share it here so that we can also enjoy the game with it... :D

I've checked both SPLS_031.47 and SPLS_031.48.

It looks like 47 is missing an entire audio channel when played on an emulator. It's not only voices that are missing, several other sound effect are gone during cutscenes (like the machinery noise in the beginning of Luna 2 scene - mission 4 moon route).

I checked it on pSX 1.13 and ePSXe 1.7 (several sound plugins) both patched and unpatched ISO's. I don't know if its an issue with the game, the emus or just my losy rip of 47. i don't have a PSX, bbut maaybe I'll check it a PS2 later.

I think those audio issues are most likely related to problems when ripping or burning the game:

- If you own the game: Try a different tool. I used ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com), which is free, and audio is working just fine.

- If you downloaded the game (shame on you!), it's most likely a bad dump. Try to find a different source for the game.

This is also posted on SRWG-W, but since I've finally managed to register here (Capcha images are down and the "read the letters" link gives wrong letters more often than not), I might as well post where Gid is more likely to read it.

First off: AWESOME JOB. The script reads really smoothly, the jokes are funny, and even the puns come through. If I could I'd buy you all a round of drinks, because you rule.

A few minor issues I noticed (updated as I find more):

When Ryuune uses the Divine Sword, one of her quotes reads " ke this! Divine Arm!"
Shu(u)'s name is spelled with one "U" in dialogue but two in combat.
When buying parts at the bazaar, the Repair Kit (HP restoration) has the description of a Super Repair Kit (HP, EN, ammo and SP restoration).
Eagle Fighter N has Fighter spelled "Fitghter".
I've only noticed it in Stage 13, so I'm not sure if it's only there or everywhere (and it might be deliberate, I don't know), but the lettering in the chapter titles is off-alignment, with some letters higher or lower than others.

WARNING: EXTRA-NITPICKY NOTES FOLLOW:
When Tetsuya uses Scramble Cutter, the translation of the battle cry reads "Scrander Cutter" (He does say "Scramble," or at least it sounds like it to me)
During Biel and Dowas' conversation before chapter 13, Biel says "There are already Civilians with a mentality close to ours Living in a region of the North Ameria continent." "Living" should be lowercase, and "American" is misspelled.
Volt Frigate's cold laser is Freezer Beam in the attack list, but Freezer Ray when Hiyoshi yells its name during the attack.

oh anyway i found a good dump and now i'm happily screaming my lungs out of every super attack (SCIAINNNNNNNNNN SPAAAAKKKUUUU)

Nailed the spelling of Precia (glad I'm not the only one who noticed her name was a pun on the word "precious")

Missed with Tyutti Nolbach; it's more likely Tutti Norbach (the u in Tutti having an umlaut or whatever those two dots are called)

I'm undecided on Cenia as I actually like it better with a C. I just hope Wendy's family name is Ichnault and not Icknart

I have a ton of screenshots of minor typos.

Oh, and an issue. On occasion, various characters' (Zechs, Heero, Kouji Kabuto to name a few) over-the-top super attacks are so awesome that they crash the emulator. it's possible this is the emulator's fault (ePSXe 1.7.0), but as its not a consistent error, it might be related to coding in the pilot text.

so how does the game compare to super robot taisen OG for those that have played it?

It's more primitive, particularly it lacks the ability to customize pilot skills, and the support system was brand new in this one, so it's not refined yet.You can consider AG to be sort of an alternate version of OG2. One with famous Japanese robots.

Sombold seems to be an actual name, though, sort of like the Sanger/Zengar thing.

But "Sanger" is how it's spelled, and "Zengar" is how it's pronounced. It's only a thing because Japanese uses a purely phonetic alphabet.

I'd always thought that the Gloval/Global thing was just a knee-jerk "Since Macek translated it like this, it HAS TO BE wrong!" reaction rather than anything that had a reason.

From what Animeigo said in the past, it's not so much "Carl Macek is teh suxxor" as "we want people to see clearly that this isn't Robotech, so let's make the names distinctly different where we can." Regardless, they explictly weren't going on "this is the RIGHT way to spell the name."

(My pet peeve, incidentally, is "Palace Athene," but that's Bandai's screwup, not AGTP's.)

Oh, also, I think Hope and Faith's names got switched around. I haven't gotten the full-HP restoration spell yet, but the SP restoration has been tagged Faith, which is the name Atlus used for HP restoration, and which doesn't seem like it would logically follow from "Anticipation" (Hope in the OG releases).

Edit: Chapter 16 on the Fort Severn route is "I'll Sell the Gundam!" on the title screen, and "Gundam For Sale!" on the intermission screen.

In the bazaar, a Cartridge (restore EN and ammo) has the description of a Repair Kit (restore HP).

Speaking of mixed up naming.
All the GM variants from 0083 - GM Cannon, GM Custom and GM Quale (hope I got the spelling right) have a weapon called Beam Rifle. Except that it's clearly a machine gun (or Ballistic Rifle like it's called on a Leo).

2 issues with translation so far, both are with older series that I imagine the translator had not seen in full (since few English-speaking mecha fans have). They should be minor corrections. I have not noticed many other problems thus far despite the high number of obscure series used in alpha Gaiden, so good job overall!
A Raideen character's name has been entirely mistranslated. "Dr. Touzan" should be "Dr. Higashiyama". This appears to be a simple issue with the translator simply picking the wrong reading for kanji that can have several pronunciations. In the Raideen series itself, this character's name is always pronounced aloud as "Higashiyama".
One of Jiron's attack quotes has been translated as "Xabungle is a boy!!" This is an extremely inappropriate translation given the content of the Xabungle plot. Explaining why is somewhat complicated so I will elaborate.
The phrase that appears to be translated as "boy" is "otoko no ko", and in ordinary contexts this would be correct. However, it is a very old writing convention of mecha shows that a "main character" robot like Xabungle is not referred to with standard object pronouns, but with the "ko" kanji that usually means "child". However, when a robot is called "ko", it is very inappropriate to translate this kanji in any way that literally
So, Jiron is not literally stating his robot is a male child. More importantly, it would be extremely out of character for Jiron to call his robot a "boy" because of his role in Xabungle's story. In Xabungle, other characters constantly make fun of Jiron for being childish or acting like a little boy, mostly because he is still upset about the death of his parents long after the three-day time limit for that has passed. Jiron is very sensitive to this mockery and often tries too hard to prove his masculinity and maturity by performing extreme acts of violence that show off Xabungle's power. The scene where he first yells his ridiculous phrase in the show is one such moment.
What Jiron is actually saying with this attack quote, and in the original scene this line references, is that Xabungle is a "man robot", emphasizing Xabungle's cool adultness and maturity. That literal translation would sound fairly stupid in English, of course, but changing "boy" to "man", "man's robot", or "manly robot" communicates the original spirit of the line much better.

You'd have a point, except I'm not going off Animeigo's work.
I'm going off the official Big West/Studio Nue romanization.

Though as an interesting note: The AnimEigo liner notes are by Egan Loo, who runs the Big-West-licensed Macross Compendium. They're as close to official Macross as you can get without kicking Studio Nue's door down and demanding Kawamori answer your questions personally.

Anyways...
Unlike SOME serieses (Cy/Psybust/baster), Macross has a consistent set of official romanized names for most characters and things.
(For unknown reasons, Milia seems to have missed the boat, and her name shifts around almost as much as Masaki's mech does, though it's USUALLY spelled with an L (or two) rather than R. The rest of the zentradi shift around because no one can remember Vrlitwhai is how you spell Britai(I had to look it up).).

Now, the Minmay/Minmei thing, that's more a case of kneejerk anti-Robotech than anything else(though the two shows do have different official romanizations).

But Global/Gloval strikes me as a more fundamental issue. They're actually different pronunciations from an english point of view, and different intended nationalities.
...
Not that Global really strikes me as a very italian name, but... at least it doesn't sound fake-russian. :P

Focker is a bit more anal, but it's in keeping with Kawamori's fondness for working aviation nods in. There's a LOT of "not quite right" aviation names in Macross.
Focker is a nod to the german airplane manufacturer Fokker, much like VF-1 manufacturer Stonewell/Bellcom is a nod to then-real-world Rockwell and Bell.

Now that we're all thoroughly confused...
...
I'm shutting up now.

Quote
(My pet peeve, incidentally, is "Palace Athene," but that's Bandai's screwup, not AGTP's.)

That one drives me crazy too, and I'm not even a Gundam fan.

Also: I stuck Noin in the Wing Zero Custom. Because I'm an idiot, that's why.

I'm mildly disappointed that the Zero system doesn't drive her crazy and make her go boss mech on my ass when I deploy her.

at mission 4L myself, noticed a nitpicky spelling thing.

in the conversation between Hilde and Relena about the mechs they're scrapping, they mention Geara Dogas, Gedlaves, and one Aerogater mech, the Zechariah, but they spell it 'Zekaria'

I know, yes, we're talking a word translated from hebrew into english into japanese and back into english, but the accepted spelling is in fact 'Zechariah' or "Zachariah' as it's the root hebrew name that becomes "Zachary'.

As I remember it, the Atlus translation of OG1 and 2 got it right.

Now, Gid, please don't be upset at my nitpicking.   only nitpick because I love the work, and let me say, I love the work.

On an unrelated note, when in the alphaverse did everybody's favorite Sniper Loli show up?   Of course I'm referring to Latooni Subota

I've noticed something about the messed up battle quotes, like Wufei's "No one can stop me" or Ryune's "Take that. Divine Arm" (+ a bunch of other i've found so far).

It's allways the first 2 letters that are missing or replaced by random garbage.

I've noticed that the pilots names disappear after switching pages in the unit upgrade (and probably weapon upgrade screen), im using pSX. what would this be from?

That's one of the known issues listed in the readme. Sometimes it's pilot names, sometimes it's the entire line (Mech name, pilot name, pilot level), sometimes it's weapon info in the combat menus.

I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Aeon Genesis crew for putting out another incredible release. Your work is always top-shelf and you folks ask nothing in return. So again, my biggest thanks to you all for every single minute of hard work put forth over these last six years.

Now finish Alpha so I can start harrasing you to start A2 and A3 already :D

A non-nitpicking post!

Bryger's introduction is AWESOME. If you went to the Lean Horse route, make sure you start a new game later and go to the Argama route to see this scene.

So i have one of the 48 copies, noticing that the normal patcher didn't work.  So i tried the method on page two posted by gouki, but i'm having a problem.  PATCHFILES/SYSTEM_031 won't open.  It won't even let me choose something to open it WITH.  I tried patching without it, but that didn't work.

To eit that part I had to go into folder options, scroll down to CNF, hit advance, new and create an "edit" (name shouldn't matter) option that used notepad.

I don't know about any of that hacking stuff so you can play games on Xboxes or anything, if that's even involved here.

All the files that need to be changed for the .48 version can be opened with notepad (I dragged and droped into a blank one, but opening directly should work).

I seem to have another problem, during the rescue mission near Dakar with Braiger, the movie that's supposed to play crashes both emulators (ePSXe 1.7.0 and pSX, 1.13).
Just like Alpha and the Evangelion intro movie.
I've tried to get around it but no luck.
Any ideas?

Title: Re: Release News ~ Merry Christmas - SRW Alpha Gaiden
Post by: TCM on January 04, 2009, 02:30:26 PM
Using SSSPSX emulator, the game plays fine, but all voices and some sound effects are missing. Note that this may be an artifact of the emulator, or a problem with the pre-patched ISO I grabbed (I had the .48 image, and didn't notice the fix on this topic.). I'll be testing the .48 patched ISO with ePSXe 1.70, pSX 1.13, and SSSPSX, and let you know my findings.

EDIT: And yes, I know SSSPSX is massively out of date, but I don't like to bother updating emulators unless I have to.

EDIT2: The pre-patched ISO was the problem. After patching my own (.48) image (which itself was downloaded, not ripped by me) using the method outlined on page 2, the voices and sound effects all work. So, if you've downloaded the pre-patched ISO (which is the one I've seen on major torrent search engines), that's probably the problem.

I must be doing something wrong if the page two steps are working for everyone with .48.  I'm starting to think something is somehow interfering with patching process, can't figure out any other reason that it works perfectly before the patch but not afterwards.  Even after several retries at ripping an image and trying to patch on two computers.

Edit: Well finally got it working, but only after getting a copy of .47.  I've given up trying to figure out what went wrong with the .48 copy.

1.update cdtools
2.go to the web address and look at the lua text script its the one i used to get my patch working hope this helps.

I have an interesting little problem, now.

I've been using the pSX emulator, when I "Insert CD" of the cue file, it loads a PSX logo, and nothing important. If I use a save state of the title screen, I can get past it. Oddly, my emulated memory card got corrupted (Somehow) at about the time this started happening.

Yes, the PS2 can already play PSX games, but your PS2 needs to be modded to not care that the translated version isn't a "legit" disc (or that it's out of region), even if you own the original. The same is true of an actual PSX.

I think I've figured out my interesting problem: I didn't edit the "Boot 31.47" line to read "31.48". Will be back after test.

EDIT: Yes it worked. Interestingly, my emulated memory card was wiped again, this time without the messy corruption.

Post by: Dashman on January 12, 2009, 07:19:53 AM
finally made it here (thanks for removing the "write the invisible word" thing :P). first of all, great work, even with the small issues I love it. I had no problems patching my iso (I think it was one of those 47 versions out there) and have been playing through 32 stages so far, switching between ePSXe (for funds/bs codes, yeah I stink) and pSX for normal play without sound problems of any kind (well, pSX doesn't feature the "echo" effect for super robot pilots' voices, but that's an emulation issue) and I've noticed some glitches, most probably caused by a bad version of the game.

1) bazaar went completely crazy. having 35 pages of spare parts to buy is not really normal, and being offered some Arghamas for purchase isn't either. this problem didn't appear before patching.

2) some units have weird stats/weapons. well, actually only one, my Gundam Double X can use its Beam Rifle 32 out of 8 times... isn't it convenient? I don't recall this happening before patching either.

3) sometimes, during a normal attack you can see the "support attack" message appear on screen as if it was a real support attack. this definitely didn't happen before patching.

4) some conditions for recruiting characters are messed up. this happened to me before patching. normally you get to convince Puru 2 up to 3 times (and blowing her up with Judau 1 or 2, 2 if you want to be sure) to get Haman's Qubeley, or only 2 for the red Qubeley. the game lets me convince her 4 times and I still get the red Qubeley. another one is Enil's Jenice Kai, on stage 32 (I think) you should be able to convince her for the last time, or blow her machine up for the last time with Garod to get it, but it doesn't work no matter what you try, you can't get it (thus missing G-Bits).

5) can't finish the game. this happened to my iso before patching sadly. on mission 32 space route Harry Ord is supposed to appear in his Gold SUMO in the battlefield, but instead I get Musashi in Getter-1 o_O, thus not letting Harry join (nor Musashi if I remember correctly) and messing up some event in a later scenario, hanging the game. if you take earth route, there's a stage in which Kouji is left alone against lots of Mazinger enemies, I remember there was an event that didn't happen (God knows why) and didn't let you finish the scenario, I still have to test that though.

the point of this long story is: if you find you have issue 1 stop using that iso and look for a good one (which I'll do now) :P

Title: Re: Release News ~ Merry Christmas - SRW Alpha Gaiden
Post by: suchiuomizu on January 12, 2009, 07:42:59 AM
There is a save game editor out there that will let you fix some of the problems and avoid using two emulators.  I used it to replace the red Quebely Mk II with Haman's after hae your problem and to force Enil's custo Jenice in when it would not let me convince her either.  It might work for the Harr/Musahi issue but I don't know since I was able to get around that with my unpatched .48 version.

Title: Re: Release News ~ Merry Christmas - SRW Alpha Gaiden
Post by: Dashman on January 12, 2009, 09:02:28 AM
that could be a solution if I knew where the flags for certain conditions are stored... well, guess that a savefile is not that big, what's the name of that savefile editor? (just googled it and didn't find anything significative) normally I just changed units' IDs with ePSXe (on Bazaar or even existing units), but some of them crashed the game (try buying a Hi-Nu Gundam... :P). I managed even to turn that Getter-1 appearing in scenario 32 into a Gold SUMO, but wasn't successful at turning Musashi into Harry (it was long ago, can't remember why)... I'll give a try to that savefile editor, but will look for a proper iso anyway, thanks.

I'll second the rifle ammo issue. Both DX and DX+G-Falcon have normal ammo count in Unit Info during intermission and then change to 32/8 during the battle.
The same with the "Support Attack" sign showing up during normal attacks. Or at least same untranslatetd japanese sign shows up during normal attack animation in the lower right corner, but not on the map if turn off animation,

As for the other stuff:
- bazzar works fine (thou I'm such a cheapskate that my Blue Stones capped at 9999)
- Harry showed up normally in his SUMO in Moon Route 32
- no problems in getting the white Qubeley

I took the Turn-A route so I cant't check the Janice/G-bits issue yet. I've been playing on SPLS 031.48 but I've checked the DX's rifle on 47 ... got the same problem there.

Wow, can't believe I missed the release date by a couple weeks but better late than never. :D I had a hunch it would be Alpha Gaiden though, so I dusted off my import copy that I had left virtually untouched for 8 or so years. Glad I knew where to find it still! Maybe I'll upload some scans from the original manual if I can get my piece of junk scanner to work.

I can tell I've been out of the scene way too long when my co-worker hears about the translation releases before I do! Oh yeah, Gid you remember that Gundam X gif you showed me all those years ago?

That's a link to the editor.  You don't have to worry about flags, it is easy to use.  You just find the appropriate unit on the units tab and replace it, changing pilots is easy too.  I had to do that when I got Shin Getter, Hayato and Benkei made into Shin Getter 2 and 3 but Ryouma did not make into Shin Getter 1.

One thing I forgot to mention is that it apparently won't work on 64-bit versions of Windows XP/Vista.

Oh god yes, first off, thanks Gid, you rock out loud for this patch, I can die a happy man now.

Secondly...this is a technical question. I (unfortunately) torrented two versions of this (I will buy this game however next chance I get, money is kind of tight.) One that was a .img file and a .bin file. I split and patched up the .bin, but is there anything I can do with the .img in order to get it into .bin/.cgu format to patch it? Just curious thats all really. Thanks in advance.

Unless there's some easy conversion tool around ...
The easiest way would be to mount the .img in a cd-rom emulator. Then just rip the emulated CD into bin/cue format.

Well, this game is nothing short of awesome.  Danke, Ghid.

Unfortunately, I went moon route (Well, both times, but I'm talkin' the second one) and my game crashed when I got the Ra Calium to the microwave dish (I don't remember the exact mission number, it's the one with a bazillion bits.) and the game froze.  It's a fairly long mission (at least two hours since you can't use map weapons and since everyone can replenish hp and EN fairly easily as it's like a war of attrition) so I will retry it, but hopefully it doesn't happen again.

The only weird thing I did was I put Lt. Harry in the Val Varo (kind of awesome), besides slaughtering everyone instead of trying to complete the mission without everyone shooting the Ra Calium down (yeah, right).

Even though I didn't like Stardust Memory that much, the mobile armours from it are kind of amazing, and the music is as rockin' as ever.

Thanks to whoever put up the editor, I'll fiddle with it if I still have trouble.

Post by: Dashman on January 13, 2009, 09:38:44 AM
thanks a lot for the editor, I'll give it a try soon :)

btw, I sometimes have been successful in turning .img images into .bin ones just by changing the extension iirc (yeah, it's quite a dumb solution, but I think it worked sometimes).

I totally loved 0083 for its good animation and Gato, that guy was badass (some stupid stuff and overdramatic scenes with Kou and Nina made me look somewhere else though...).

Got G-Bits as normal. Also, game didn't freeze when the Ra Calium moved onto the microwave station.

Stage 36's title "Shin Getter Robo, Stolen!" cut off the last half of "Robo".

I tried the savefile editor already and wow, amazing what you can do with it. I put Harry in my squad and then he showed up in stage 32 (I guess the problem was that for some reason I never got him... when does he join normally?). a pity that altering parts (adding 9 haros for example) doesn't work properly (you get 0 out of 9), but at least you can put as many parts in your mechs as you want... my cheater soul is burning man!

Off-topic (kinda) I visited the creator of this savefile editor website and found this kind of program for most SRW games (except the GB and SNES ones), at last I'll be able to add Seabook Arno to my character roster in SRW64 without sacrificing an existing character! (and F91, which I never managed to make it pop up correctly...) oh and Zambot too, but that's secondary :P

Hi,

I've seen and heard great things about this patch. I played this game during high school, and though I never understood just WHAT was going on, it was still good fun watching stuff blow up minute after minute. Now it looks like I can relive it with the plot!

Well, I would, but I seem to have a problem downloading the file from the website. The zip file posted keeps telling me there was an "Unexpected end to archive." I can see the files inside, but I can't extract them. I saw the two external links, but both the Rapidshare and Mediafire links seem to be down. Can anyone help me? All other attempts to find an external link have resulted in only ISO images prepatched to the English patch.

Thank you very much in advance.

That sounds like you're not downloading the entire file, and is probably an issue with your internet timing out on the transfer, messing up, and thinking it's complete when it isn't (which is a big pain).

If you can, use a download client, as they shouldn't do that.

The suggestion is much appreciated. However, even with a download manager or somesuch, at 24% it keeps timing out, and it refuses to resume downloading. >_< What were the chances?

Still, thanks again.

EDIT: Okay, I found an alternate download site for future reference if anyone suffers the same fate as I. Just grab it from here.

Fiddle with the graphical settings on ePSXe (Or whatever you're using) to prevent the crashes.  Besides the editing software, I don't think it's possible to skip much of anything.  I remember from Valkyrie Profile that tweaking the graphical output controls makes a lot of difference (and sometimes, sound settings, too!)

Something weird happened to me today - a guy behind me in class saw me playing SRWAG and passed up a note (he immediately recognized it from playing the Japanese version a while back) asking for it, so I stuffed it on his USB drive and off he went.  He was pretty happy, since he'd since lost the disc.

I'd like to remind people about documented AG (unpached original) bugs:

Quote from: www.dra-mata.com
A few Japanese sites have documented a few bugs with the gameplay worth noting.
>On Stage 32 (Moon route), Harry is supposed to launch in his SUMO, but for
some reason, sometimes Getter-1 launches instead with Musashi. When this bug
occurs, it renders Harry permanently unusable.
>In a worst-case scenario, a lethal bug can occur in stage 36 that keeps the
game from continuing; Without Ryouma at the helm of Getter Dragon, the story
doesn't proceed as it should.
>On Stage 39 ("Showdown at X-Point!"), if you have Zeta Gundam transformed into
its Waverider mode when the Rosamia event occurs (when you reduce Rosamia to
under 50% HP), the game can freeze.

wow, didn't know these bugs were official, I always thought it was some emulation issue or some bad iso dump problem... thanks for the info EaterBrain.

Garesh, as you can read in EaterBrain's post, your problem is that somehow Ryouma is not piloting Getter-Dragon. a possible solution would be using the savefile editor that suchiuomizu mentioned some posts before and place good ol' Ryou where he belongs. if that doesn't work, well... shit happens.

ok, found some time to play today and got to stage 35 moon route, only to hang the game in the same spot it always hanged for me. when you get Ral Cailum on the microwave transmitter, enemies flee (if there's any enemies left, that is) and after some small dialogue they say more enemies are coming... but they don't come out (shy enemies) and you are left there with a bunch of poor sad mechas with no enemies to have endless conversations with before blowing up their asses... guess my copy is really screwed up. I'll give a try to x-point route when I find some more time and see if it still hangs in the stage in which Kouji gets owned by Shin Getter. did anyone have this problem before?

That's another one of those problems that have been around pre-patch I believe.  It is apparently usually caused by killing too many enemies.  If that dosen't fix it I don't know what else to say.

killing too many enemies in a SRW? something has gone really wrong in these games lol

anyway thanks, I was suspecting that could be the reason (couldn't resist clearing the map...), I'll give it a try later.

EDIT: YAY! it worked!! it was quite annoying going through the whole stage killing ONLY 1 enemy (moreover when your Ra Cailum is surrounded by around 50 brainless bastards with bazookas and you can only play defensive...), but now I can play the game to the end! thanks a lot suchiuomizu!

...where did you find all that info btw?

That's another one of those problems that have been around pre-patch I believe.  It is apparently usually caused by killing too many enemies.  If that dosen't fix it I don't know what else to say.

The unpatched version got me past that point, but I think I may have killed only one with the unpatched version anyway...

IIRC, the cause of the problem is that every unit spawned takes up a space in the unit list and isn't actually removed when the enemy is killed, and that the game can only store a certain amount of enemy units per scenario after which point the list is "full" and no more enemies can spawn. Normally this isn't a problem, but the G-Bits in that stage respawn pretty much infinitely, so if you try to clear the stage by killing them all then after suitable slaughter you WILL eventually hit that limit, causing the G-Bits to stop spawning...and preventing the game from spawning the enemies in the next part of the scenario, confusing the game and stopping your progress.

It's okay to kill a few G-Bits, you can probably kill twenty or thirty without any problems, but there really isn't much need to keep count as long as you're just clearing a path rather than outright slaughtering everything you can. If the G-Bits stop spawning, you might as well force a game over because you've already killed too many enemies.

Could be worse. At least it doesn't overflow and start rewriting OTHER data in RAM.

Out of curiosity, I've been noticing a lot of problems cropping up for people with the .47 version that I know don't happen in the .48 version. This is a check of people's experiences. Fill it out. >_>

Version Number:
Does your game have voices?
Do the character mouths move in scenes?
Did Harry launch in his Gold SUMO in Space Route stage 32?
Was Harry a pilot on your side before then, with his SUMO?
Did Musashi launch there, for some reason, causing your game to freeze/be unplayable?
Did your game have any issues on scenario 36 (X-point or Space?)
Did you get the G-bits?
If not, did you follow every necessary step exactly?

I've had none of these problems, for the record. Well, okay, my character's mouths don't move, and I know from vids that they do in @g.

I didn't mention the mouths animation but yeah, happens to me too, most probably because in pre-patched version text was generated symbol by symbol during cutscenes instead of just showing the whole message as in the patched version iirc (characters' stopped moving their mouths when the whole message was completely printed). as for the list of problems:

Version Number: .47
Does your game have voices? yes (super robot pilots lack echo effect in most emulators -exception being ePSXe)
Do the character mouths move in scenes? no
Did Harry launch in his Gold SUMO in Space Route stage 32? no
Was Harry a pilot on your side before then, with his SUMO? no
Did Musashi launch there, for some reason, causing your game to freeze/be unplayable? he launched, but freeze problems appeared later in the game (maybe not related to this)
Did your game have any issues on scenario 36 (X-point or Space?) yes (famous Ryouma stuff)
Did you get the G-bits? no (well, actually I didn't get to the point where you get them and Enil was not convinceable so... no)
If not, did you follow every necessary step exactly? yes

to your list of problems I would add the glitched bazaar, although it's not exactly a problem (being able to buy megaboosters early in the game is cool)

To put a stop to that, I should point out that I have version .47 (properly patched) and I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever, although I didn't try to get the G-Bits.

I have the .48 version, everything works, minus the freeze at the moon (1 enemy seems to be the most you can kill).

That can't be. I killed several during my playthrough and had no problems, and version number shouldn't affect that as it's a game issue rather than a patch issue.

Thats what I thought too...With that patched version, I killed 2 or three enemies and it locked up;  I tried the mission unpatched and killed only 1 enemy, and it worked fine...I didn't get the change to test patched killing only 1 enemy though.

I was under the impression that by "version" he meant "version of the patch" in which case, the answer is still no.

BOOT = cdrom:SLPS_031.47;1

to instead read

BOOT = cdrom:SLPS_031.48;1

How do you edit the .cnf file? I was able to take care of everything cept for this last step.

The easiest way to edit the cnf file would probably be to just right click the file, select "Open with..." and choose notepad to edit the file.  After editing the file, just save it from within notepad and you'll be good to go.

That's the thing I can't open it in notepad or rather it is not giving me the option to open it in notepad unlike the other ones that I edited. I'm currently using XP Home is there some plug-in that I'm missing that allows me to alter .cnf files?

BTW it seems to be identifying it as a SpeedDial file.

weird, normally it appears with just right-clicking it. if it still doesn't, try right-clicking the file with SHIFT pressed. that worked back on win98. if it still doesn't let you, open notepad, go to File -> Open... and instead of "Text files" select "All files", so that you can open that .cnf file.

I had trouble with that too. I changed the association in the file types section.

To do this, open "My Computer" and click on "Tools" and then "Folder Options" from the menu. A new window will open, click the "File Types" tab near the top. Now you should be looking at a large list of file types. Scroll down to "CNF" and select it. You should see it associated with Speedial. Click the "Change..." button to choose a different associated program for it. At this point you can select any text editor, I prefer Wordpad, but you can use whatever you want. Once you have chosen a program here and clicked "Ok" it should have the change listed in the listbox and you should be able to just double-click it to open it with the program you chose.

I hope that helps as it worked for me! ;)

check this out; i have 3148 version patch works fine with it once you do the following. take a look at the lua script i had to do some minor tweaking but it worked. if you still have probs 3148 users let me know i may have not been detailed enough.
1.update cdtools
2.go to the web address and look at the lua text script its the one i used to get my patch working hope this helps.

http://masterxagas.awardspace.com/srwag/index.php?id=patch

Can someone upload the updated cd-tools so I can get my patch working? Their site has been down for a while now and I can get an updated version of it.

I love your work and i have been a loyal fan for years now. I enjoy the story of SRW AG very much. But i was wondering if you plan on "finishing" this? It just throws me off with some of the text shooting of screen. Plus i have the curse of OCD and it makes it hard to focus on whats going on in this great game when i see o$#aAIrgr on their types. In no way am i asking you to do this or do i want to take you away from let's say SRW A or any of your other fine works in progress. I was just wondering is all.

IMPORTANT!

For people who have the stage 36 glitch where ryouma doesn't launch, try loading an earlier save and selling one or two not needed units to the bazaar.

It is quite possible that this also works for the Harry ord glitch in stage 32 ( i think) where musashi in getta 1 launches instead, though I have not tested this, if anyone does test this please post to confirm.

Update: so, it was not so simple.. I finally got it to work as it should though.. check this thread here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/580758-super-robot-taisen-alpha-gaiden/57253400
