Title: Progress News ~ Alpha Has an Editor
Post by: Gideon Zhi on February 23, 2010, 01:01:26 AM
Please welcome Antialias, recruited in desperation from the depths of /m on 4chan, to the SRW Alpha project. When he passed me these images two weeks ago he´d edited up through the route merge at scenario 6 (of 57.) So I´ve uploaded a bunch of the stuff he sent me to showcase his work! The two snaps below are now in the game´s gallery, along with nine more new snaps. Enjoy!

Although I have never played any SRW games, this definitly looks very interesting! Looking forward to this one as well! Guess, I should watch more "Super Robot" Animes, though :D

I should like to point out that not all the lines I've edited have the word 'guys' in them. It's a good 90% though.

Thank you for taking over as editor, as there was no way I would be able to finish editing in any realistic time frame (ended up losing over nine months of work after having to reformat my hard drive).

Also, using the word "guys" is much better than seeing a bunch of ellipses.

I hope everyone can bear with the various Briticisms that may have crept in.

I should also note that the screens, while fantastic by themselves, do not represent the full scope of the edit. There are sequences in the snaps that were really well done and also very funny, but would have required context (i.e. another several screenshots) to make sense. The ones that are up are the best of the ones that stand well alone.

If I recall, the best conversation in crossover history is a wall of ellipseseseses in Alpha.

TL Note: "Sugoi" means "totally badass" in Japanese.

Actually, Sugoi means "awesome," in the sense of the scale of an event. It can be applied to both good and bad things. So, a 1080 degree spin on a skateboard would be sugoi, but so would a Gojira attack.

I'd say a rough equivalent for that line (since it's just an insulting/threatening way of saying "you") would be "You fucking bastard!"  After all, Japanese, like Yiddish, has very subtle profanity.

I think you're right because 'the Federation' is a single entity, so it should be isn't instead of aren't.

But anyways, these screens look great! I'm glad to see so much progress on this.

Honestly I didn't think about it when I was writing that line... I suppose I assumed the Federation were a group entity:

Aren't those seagulls...
Aren't the Federation...

Sounds right to me.

Then again, I barely passed English GCSE.

Strunk & White says that a group entity when treated as a whole is singular. "The band sucked live." "The Federation ate the cheese." "The IRS fucked up my taxes."

However, when you're dealing with individual members of the group entity, they're treated as plural: "The band's members were off-key." "Those Fed soldiers have stinky cheese farts." "The IRS collector is to blame."

To recap, the thing as a whole is ONE THING. The Federation, The IRS, The Band. You wouldn't refer to a box as plural just because it contained twelve cans of soda, would you?

I know, but I was  mocking the TL notes referenced in the prior post. Fansubbers do stupid things, and I fully expect to see siuch a note in a fansub script someday where "Cool!" would've been a perfectly acceptable translation.

Something along those lines, only with less accuracy in the note.

I wish the editor luck, it is a very huge game.

Yatsu Tachi Kisamas!

bit of knowledge I've gaind from watching WAY too much anime.

Yatsu Tachi Kisama genrally translates into, "You  bastard". There is another word that goes in the middle, and it is normally a very colorful word not meant for young children, but the word in question can vary based on the instance it's used in.

Since it's Kamille speaking to Jarred, that instance of the phrase probably translates into "You f**king bastard!" but that's taking Kamille's personality into account so it may be wrong.

Ya know, I was wondering that too.

I figure it's one of two possibilities, both voice-acting related.

A. He is concerned about the possibility of an english dub, and is requesting raw japanese.

B. He is concerned about the possibility of no english dub, and is requesting a way to disable voices altogether so he doesn't hear raw japanese.

Title: Re: Progress News ~ Alpha Has an Editor
Post by: jolly_old_saint on September 21, 2010, 03:57:17 AM
Er, the patch won't affect voices. And it shouldn't have in alpha gaiden, if that's where you're getting that from. I think some emulators/plugins had a problem recognizing the voices, ask around if you've issues there. That said, I wouldn't expect a patch for this one soon, as I think Gideon's focusing all his efforts on that macross ace frontier game for the PSP (or something).

...That said, if anyone asks (and you can hold me to this years from now), I'll do a voiceover playthrough of the entire game. I mean to get the footage anyway, once the translation's done and I get myself a much more decent computer. And a much more decent mic. And a camcorder that may take doing things I won't be proud of to obtain. And a refund for that camcorder because I should've looked a bit more into what kind I was purchasing. Ah, well...

I mean, I know some people dislike languages they can't understand, but I'd find it pretty tough to appreciate the raw hotblood of, say, Getter Robo if I didn't hear SOMEONE, english or japanese, yelling GETTAAAAAAAAAA BEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM at some point.

Even if you're on the real robot side you at least get the pleasure of listening to Kamille scream at everything like he's off his meds...

On second thought, people using real robots don't really need voices.

You'll have to be patient. Antialias did some calculations; Alpha apparently has as many words in it as 1.56 copies of War and Peace. It's gigantic.

Title: Re: Progress News ~ Alpha Has an Editor
Post by: Gideon Zhi on October 14, 2010, 04:10:32 PM
It's basically an entirely different beast. Alpha Gaiden was translated by a native English speaker with a great love for SRW. Alpha was translated by a person for whom English is a third language, who valued speed over eloquence (though he *is* a huge fan of the series.) It is also much bigger than Alpha Gaiden.

I just finished Alpha Gaiden not long ago .. it's great. I'm really looking forward to Alpha translate.

Is it possible to just release an alpha version of the patch with all text translated but not corrected?

I really don't mind if there are errors or if the translation is not top notch .. I just want to be able to understand the basics of the story and be able to play it.
