Title: Major Release News ~ Hourai High Celebrates 15 Years - Now in English
Post by: Gideon Zhi on April 19, 2011, 03:55:48 PM
Fifteen years ago today, Hourai Gakuen no Bouken was unleashed upon an unsuspecting Japanese public. It does not seem to have made much of a splash, which is unfortunate because it´s quite a neat little game! But today we honor its 15th birthday with a complete English translation of the title. I hope you enjoy playing it! (I´m certainly going to enjoy washing my hands of it!)

AND THE CROWD GOES WILD

HELL YES. Thank you, almighty Lord God Gideon. I've been looking forward to this one ever since I first found AGTP some over half a decade ago looking for the Live-A-Live patch. You are the man.

The screen goes black during after the girl's dorm scenario. In the "news" scene that happens after you turn off the computer, the message box glitches up and after a few messages, the screen goes black and the game freezes.
I've tested it on zsnes 1.51 and snes9w 1.52

Yeah, I've noticed that typo plus a few other oddities here and there. Once I get the chance I'll get the screenshots off of my DS flashcard and post them on here.

Can I get screenshots just before the freeze? Also, what text speed are you running at? It matters if it's the fastest one.

SCRATCH ALL OF THAT!
Damn Linux incompatibilities  =P I was using J-IPS on Linux as I have for other patches, but it apparently screwed this one up. Used ipsXP on windows this time.
Works on Windows and Linux for me now.

Although now, time to mercilessly track bugs and spelling/grammar errors XD

Although, still thank you sir =D for providing all your hard work, you too satsu there would be no translation without you.

Yay! Glad this is out, this game looks really cool.  One problem,
when making my character's name, trying to choose a lower case i gets me a u instead.  Not sure what's up with that.  Either way, thanks so much for the work you did!

The description of the item "Question List" says that it "Boots ACA" -- I think that this should be "Boosts ACA"?

Anyway, played through the game a bit, and I have already noticed some spelling errors, although I assumed there would be a few.
other then the ind -> mind one;
1) um not sure if this is a typo, or just my nitpicking, when the teacher says dow - - a- anyway, is she supposed to interrupt her own last word? minor but I thought I would mention it..

2) The principal/teacher says she "graduated from uni in April, have no clue what "uni" is...

3) the newspaper/magazine team says "and defender of love, justice, etc." the wording was weird, I was wondering if it was supposed to be defenders.
I only played a tiny bit, it's late, past midnight actually >.>, here so I wanted to leave that small list I made while platying.

Also, XD I actually took these notes down on paper while playing.

Good job so far though, after that first initial bad patching, everything has worked and everything seems to be fine other then a typo here and there.

2) The principal/teacher says she "graduated from uni in April, have no clue what "uni" is...

Uni is short for University.

Unfortunately, I get a crash right after defeating the androids in the Girl's Dorm.

After that last screenshot, it quickly shows one more dialogue box, then dumps to a black screen, with no music and does nothing.

The translations for several of the sports club final abilities seem wrong -- they all say things along the lines of "get two attacks with edged weapons" or "10% defense with thrown weapons" or the like, but that's not what they do.

What they actually do is (for instance) grant you two attacks with all weapons, and also allow you to always equip all weapons of the the listed type if you couldn't already, as a secondary effect.

For instance, I had Daichi master the Baseball and Kendo clubs, and he can now equip Tarot Cards, a thrown weapon (due to mastering the Baseball club) and attack twice with it with every attack (due to the Kendo club.)

Hi Gid, thanks for the translation. Just to enquire whether you had went to DD to check up about the debugging of the game. It seemed that the crash is even found in the original Japanese game. Maybe the members in DD have the walkabout for the dorm crash bug.

Ahah! You can work around the Dorm Crash by setting text speed to slowest. The lines still bug out pretty hard, but the game does continue.

Yeah, they use a lot of British-style words and phrases in this game, but most of it's easy to figure out in context. If you haven't realized what "skiving" means by about the second or third time you see it, you're probably just not paying enough attention.

Thank you for the detailed report. I have a feeling that this is a mistake present in the original Japanese - could you please post a couple of specific examples I can search for in the files so that I can check this?

Thanks for being so dedicated as to note these things down. :)
Let me answer your questions:
1. Yep, it's a self-interrupt.
2. University.
3. "defender" agrees with "Hourai Sports", which is singular.

---

As a side note, though the translation leans towards British English (it's not an affectation, it's the language I speak), I did take care to avoid things that would be completely alienating for speakers of other Englishes, eg avoiding "Spag Bol" as a convenient way of getting "Spaghetti Bolognese" to fit in the item name character limit. Hopefully, as someone pointed out above, anything that seems strange will become clear eventually.

First of all, thank you very much for this translation. This game is hilarious. Unfortunately, I ran into a serious problem:

-Somewhat Spoilers!-

Game crashes (or freezes, whatever you call it) at the end of the Chapter 7, in which you finally escape from the island. You return to the school, newspaper clippings show (the one which you see a guy swimming away from a shark) and after a few sentences, game screen goes black.

And I was having so much fun with this crazy RPG. Please help!

Gideon, I can send  the save state if you like. Thanks in advance for any help.

Also, you can probably get past it by turning the text speed down from something that isn't instant.

Thank you for the detailed report. I have a feeling that this is a mistake present in the original Japanese - could you please post a couple of specific examples I can search for in the files so that I can check this?
The most obvious one is the final skill of the Kendo club, "License to Kill", which reads "Double attacks with slash weapons."  When I had Issac (who normally can only equip blunt weapons) learn that skill, he gained the ability to equip slashing-type weapons, and he could attack twice with any weapon.

The other ones that I assume work the same way are:

Mastery, the final skill of the Martial Arts club, which says  10% STR for Bash weapons

Eagle Eye, for the Archery club, which says 100% ACC for Bash weapons (also, I believe that should be shoot weapons -- at least, I'm fairly sure Daichi was unable to equip guns until he mastered that.)

Batter Up, for the baseball club, which says 10% DEF for Throw-type weapons.

(I say 'I assume' they work the same way because I can't figure out how to confirm that they're granting their bonus regardless of what you have equipped, since those are less obvious bonuses than attacking twice.  They do all seem to let you equip the listed weapon type if you couldn't before, though.)

Also, I think I found another bug.  When I have Matsurin use the Blue Talisman skill gained by the Ritual class in combat, the game fades to black and hangs -- setting the message speed to slow doesn't work around it, but lets me see that it fades and hangs just as it finishes printing his name as he starts to use the skill.

Also, trying to phone D-51 (the robot found in the ruins in chapter 7) at the start of Chapter 8 while he's in your party causes the text to overflow, resulting in the following:

Got a couple of issues. Thankfully changing the text speed from 3 to 2 helped with one of the gamebreakers I encountered (The ending of the Girl's Dormitory exploration, after the newsprint it would simply go to a black screen).

While inspecting the Girl's Dormitory, after rescuing Isaac, if you leave via the the drop off points you will be unable to return through the secret passage and finish the area. If you attempt to enter through the front, you will be turned away once, then your party members will clump together and the game will freeze.

Still playing through so I'll bring up any other serious issues I find, everything's looking great so far.

I THINK this is an issue with the original game. I could be wrong.

Honestly, I'm just glad no one's reported any female character-exclusive issues. I was the only one doin' beta for a female player that I know of.

When you talk to Julia on the phone in chapter 7, she says:

Guess what? The school trip
for our year's was a journey

"year's" should simply be "year" -- you talk about a class as a 'year' like that.  In American English, anyhow, I guess.

Just checked the Japanese - looks like the original text was the same, so this is an error present in the original. As for "Bash" instead of shooting weapons, that might be an error of my own - the first character of the word was corrupted in the dump, so it could have either been うつ (shot) or ぶつ (bash). Looks like I guessed the wrong one.

I sped through the game (god bless the fast-forward function on emulators) and I gotta say, I love the translation. Nothing bugs me more than an overly literal translation, so it's nice to see the effort to have all the jokes and wordplay properly conveyed to an english audience. Awesome job, Satsu!

One thing, though, in the epilogue Subterra is referred to as Corza Nostra. I guess it's a hold-over from before you decided to go with Subterra as a name instead. Still, pretty confusing for anyone who didn't read the translator's notes.

Also I am aware this isn't really the right place to ask, but can you get the ghost character when choosing the boy as main character? I checked an old GameFAQs walkthrough (amazing the game has one, really), but that one wasn't sure if the ghost is girl-exclusive.

Another minor bug with phoning people:

If you phone Chihaya in Chapter 8 while she's not on your party (this is something probably few people do, since she's optional, you only get to recruit her very late in the chapter, and if you do get her you'd probably put her on your party and then not wander around to find a phone), her message scrolls past the first page of text without waiting.  There's what looks like a broken control code there, too:

Also, there seems to be an error with the Tennis + Cheerleading combo skill.  Whenever I try to put someone into both clubs at once, the game goes black and hangs the moment the combination skill name display would usually appear.

Save of the issue here (http://www.mediafire.com/?m4pfriiktut5siw) -- just confirm the club you want to replace with Cheerleading (as long as it isn't Tennis) to see the error occur.

Here's a screenshot just before the freeze, and save state as well.  Please take care, as this glitch has actually deleted my save slot in the process!  Thankfully I was using save states extensively.  Text speed was on the fastest.

EDIT: Just did some testing . Doesn't crash if there's just 1 bat although there's some garbled text. Crashes on the 2nd bat. Haven't tried the ability on other enemies yet.

That's a ZSNES savestate just before the android battle.

There's also another glitch attached to that.  As soon as you get Isiac to join the party, you won't be able to reenter the girl's dorm from the underground pass, and the game will lock if you try to walk through the front door more than once.  Hence the reason for a savestate before the battle...

Hi there! Really love that you got this project done, it's a very quirky lil RPG.

Besides the Girls Dorm crash with the newspaper, I'm getting a crash in Chapter 6, in the 2nd jungle screen. My party approaches a point, then it clumps together, the screen pans down, then goes black and if I wait long enough it garbles up and the emulator stops working.

Also, final boss fight. Protagonist (male) is dead, I have Akiko in party with berserk status, and I had Hinako use Houraimin Z. The message window just sort of ate itself away and crashed.

There's also Fueno forest, where my equip screen got all glitchy, and crashes if I try to change Daichi's stuff.

Besides the Girls Dorm crash with the newspaper, I'm getting a crash in Chapter 6, in the 2nd jungle screen. My party approaches a point, then it clumps together, the screen pans down, then goes black and if I wait long enough it garbles up and the emulator stops working.

Here's a shot of the spot just before I hit it.

I got this crash too. Best of luck fixing it Gideon.

I'm getting a graphic glitch when I use the "Time Warp" skill.

First of all thank you for this awesome translation!

I have beaten the game with the male character right now and will do it again with the female character.

One thing I noticed is:

I have been playing the game with zsnes and the ending somehow seems to just hang up. Did this bug occur to anyone else?

It just happens after they have shown the professor in the epilogue.

After the scene the image gets scrambled and then grey/blank.

Is this a rom related bug?
It will take some time till I reach the end with the female character...

Maybe someone could help and answer the question?

Thank you once again agtp & keep up the good work and quality. ;-)

I'm not sure if this was brought up, but I was playing the carnival shooting game with the pigs, squids etc. but when I get the reward points after the game, I only get credit for the pigs I hit.  Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Are you knocking the squids/octopi off or just making them spin? if you make em spin you have to hit em a 2nd time. they only count if you knock them completely off the track

Yeah, saw the "ind" thing too. And because of I'm stupid and couldn't see that it was supposed to mean, I googled "ind" and "well never ind" xD
Oh...yeah. That's all...sorry.

Also! There is a game breaking bug when Hinako uses Blue Talisman! It freezes it. I dont know if it only freezes when she uses it!

EDIT:! Ifound another game breaking bug. When you are at the track-place and can learn the Tennis club skills it freezes for all characters.

Im using the snes9x-x64 emulator!
