Title: SMT glitch thing
Post by: KingMike on March 11, 2012, 10:03:35 PM
I just found out about this.
Oh, man. Make you sure hold Reset when you turn off the power. I don't care if you play on an emulator and you say it's the Super Nintendo and so it doesn't need it anyways.
JUST DO IT FOR THE BETTER OF HUMANITY!
We don't want to risk finding out what sort of evil spirits may live inside a possessed Super Famicom cartridge! :D

(okay, so I imagine what's really happened is it must be some sort of SRAM corruption bug, as I'm guessing the message is just something like "It'll be erased instantly." But that has got to be one of the creepiest error screens ever.)

I remember reading an article about this, actually. It's not a glitch; they deliberately built it into the game to happen once every [x] resets. I vaguely recall there being something about it occuring too often with an 8-bit counter, so they used a 16-bit counter and it almost never happens or something?

If the YouTube comments can be believed(once you get past all the idiotic catchphrase-spouting{I suffer through it so you don't have to!}), apparently those blood-red glyphs say KILL YOURSELF over and over and over.

So yeah, just a TINY bit creepier than a generic SRAM corruption message.

I ran it through Google Translate.  Apparently, it just says "Deleting now" or something similar (note that I did attempt to localize a repeated phrase that apparently only makes sense in Japanese).  It doesn't even mention death or killing, just "erasing" and "erase".

Youtubers probably just read "kill yourself" into "shut it off now" or "delete it now". But watching that alone at night is creepy as hell.

Funny this got bumped. I looked into it a month or two ago; it's a hoax. Totally false.
