Title: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns: Roll out!
Post by: Gideon Zhi on November 06, 2007, 11:14:12 AM
After possibly the longest playtest period I´ve ever had to slog through, Metal Max Returns is finally ready!

Metal Max is an open, nonlinear RPG with a heavy focus on sidequests and tank tweaking. The main game has you chasing bounty heads and finding new vehicles for your entourage, but there´s so much other stuff to do! You can pimp your tanks with decals and accessories, you can buy furniture and wall hangings for your home, play with little critters that eat your money and grow to enormous proportions, or enjoy a host of minigames. Go hunting for this week´s target and become a rich and famous bounty hunter!

I experienced a problem, but I also found the solution. If your game looks like this,
(http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q72/Drake33333/MMRZSNES142chat.jpg)

or this,
(http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q72/Drake33333/MMRZSNES142menu.jpg)

and you are using ZSNES, you need to update it to the latest version. These pics are from v1.42. I have tested it to work properly on v1.43 WIP and v1.51. I recommend the latter, since it is the latest.

Edit: Sorry about the screenshot size, is there a way to scale these down in this board? I don't like having to scroll, but I don't want to have to go edit the original images to make them the size I want. (... though I can if it is the only way.)

Edit II: Images shrunk to resonable size. Take that scrollbars! Also, thank you so much once again Gideon Zhi, for all your wonderful volunteer work for the translation community.

Yeah, that's a ZSNES issue. The readme's been updated to reflect that.

And no, I don't think there's a way to shrink the images without resizing them. You've got 'em at 2x normal SNES resolution anyway, though.

Salutations everyone.
I'm pretty glad to see this patch is out.
For some reason I can't seem to make this patch work with any copy of metal max returns that I can find.

For some reason, everytime I hardpatch or softpatch a version, the game merely shows a black screen, maybe I'm missing something? I just find this odd, as I'm not exactly a stranger to emulation.
Oh, I'm using XP, as well as tried two versions of ZSNES (1.42, and 1.51) as well as snes 9x.

Hm. Seems like a header problem...read the readme, get the right rom version (or take out the header).

Just thought I'd drop in to mention that if you try to start a new game when all of the save slots are full you can start with the maximum amount of money. You won't be able to save normally but that's what savestates are for.

Oh jeez, how careless of me, I merely had to delete the header before doing anything with the rom. Thanks for the assistance ^^;

i think i found a bug,go into your house and check the drawers, you'll find an item called sister towel, use it and the text will kinda overlay for the description (maybe i should take a pic?) oh i forgot to say i'm playing on ZSNES 1.51

Thanks -- I'm keeping screenshots of the issues I've found so far (three including this one) so I went and got a screenshot of that. I'm fairly sure we got most of the line break issues, but do mention any others you find!

This may sound stupid, but I have the same problem.

I look at the properties and it says it is larger than its supposed to be.  I have no damn clue what to do.

Not sure if this is a bug or what. But when I go to buy a piece of equipment that the hero cannot use but Sama can. It comes up with some random letters (OCaSGUB) for the hero but does show that Sama can use it.

Sadly, I do not know how to post a screenshot to show you but do have one saved.

To remove a header from a game, download snestool v12
Just use the delete header command on it on the smc file (the rom) and then you can soft patch it like most other games.

Hmm....actually, I'm having troubles myself. I got the rom, got rid of the header, it's the right size....but past the intro it freezes up.

Eh, 's probably for the better...I'll sort it out when I actually have time to play it...

It doesn't like a lot of ZSNES versions, I'm afraid. You might try the latest, or 1.36, or SNES9X.

Yep. She's ... quite a feisty gal. ;) Makes me wish the game had more than, oh, three and a half minutes of characterization and interaction. I look forwards to finding her in the DS game...

Incidentally, the names for this game are chosen at random, but in the DS game she and the mechanic both show up. Sadly, the main character of MMR has passed away -- he's the father of the main character of Hagane no Kisetsu) and they both get proper names: Ingrid and Cliff. (The MMR hero is posthumously christened Le Banner. I'm open to other readings of his name, but that's what I think it's intended to be. My respect for his dad just dropped.)

If you look at the Hagane no Kisetsu page, you can see artwork of both of them: http://www.success-corp.co.jp/software/ds/metalsaga/index.html
Click the lever, then click "Character" which is the tab right under Story, then choose the first option. Cliff is on the bottom left, and Ingrid is the blonde soldier in magenta and purple four from the left. There's another couple of MMR characters.. but I leave that as a joy for the reader. ;)

Turns out my problem was patching it, actually...oddly, it only seems to work "soft-patched."

In any case, being distracted from schoolwork now. Hope you're happy.

I found a minor bug in the text when I try to use the Sister's Towel as an item outside of combat; the text 'overlaps' strangely.  This is in SNES9x, incidently.

Think I found a very minor bug; in the factory the "Stop" and "Back" buttons on the computers that operate the converyor belts screen displays are reversed.
For instance, if you press the "back" button, the screen will say "Stop" and vice versa.

You've probably seen this mistake already, but I didn't see it posted anywhere so...

The description of the Lock Hacker says it's a 'kew' that can open any door.  I assume that should be key.

hi guys, been following Aeon Genesis for some time, first time posting.
I'm having a bizzarre issue, i can't seem to save the game. I suppose you save by talking to the memory center lady, but when i load the game it doesn't show any saved games. I played for a bit and tried both Znes and Snes9x, with the same result, the rom has the correct size. Am i doing something wrong or is it a known issue?

Title: Re: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns: Roll out!
Post by: Shadow on November 13, 2007, 09:59:24 AM
Hmm. I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 and ZSNES v1.51 and am not having any problems with saved games. I only checked once, though, as I keep the 'normal' savegames as a backup in case the savestates fail for some reason (which hardly ever happens, and it hasn't happened to me with this game).

Try checking (if you're using ZSNES) if there's a [gamename].sav file next to the rom. Perhaps your roms folder is set to Read-Only or something. Otherwise, just rely on the emulator's savestates: F2 to save, F4 to load and F3 to pick a slot (out of ten).

For SNES9X, sounds like yer issue is just that ye ain't got it set to save S-RAM data, which is basically internal battery and whatnot, the stuff that keeps saves and high-score tables and the like, basically. Ye'll wanna go up to options an enable it.

Personally, i only use save-states when I wanna see certain scenes again, otherwise, it's just kind of cheese.

Title: Re: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns: Roll out!
Post by: Shadow on November 13, 2007, 10:27:26 AM
Well, the temptation to 'cheat' with savestates is sometimes hard to resist. =P

Personally, I try and force myself to keep that to a minimum.

Title: Re: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns: Roll out!
Post by: Fuu on November 13, 2007, 10:58:48 AM
thanks for the help guys. It seems like the rom is actually to blame: while the size is correct, even without the patch it can't save, while a rom of a different size can. Back to square one!

i too have had the same problem with multiple roms and multiple forms of applying the ips patch. both using the latest versions of zsnes and snes9x. im going to continue trying but i dont know. not to mention this isnt the only game something like this has happened to. the other odd problem i had was an old dos version of snestool i use crashing after deleting the header and applying the ips, when i quit the program it dies. i've found this synonymous with the errors.

My SNESTool is a DOS version as well (v1.2) and it didn't crash after deleting the header. I applied the translation patch with Lunar IPS, though.

I found a minor text bug in the resupply interface. If you manually refill shells or armor, the mechanic quotes you the number of shells/armor that you loaded rather than the cost in G. So if you load 60 plates for a cost of 3 G, the mechanic will say the cost will be 60 G. Load 6 shells for 45 G, and he quotes 6 G. The game does deduct the correct amount of money though.

This is using BSNES .17. (I like it better than the newer versions)

text bug? i've seen a couple where txt overflows to the next line..

eg.. using mammoth tusks.. or the mad muscle bounty info

---
speaking of which. i've just got the garbled screen again (still playable at this minute.."fixed".. this time after dogging out to another town) after withdrawing a load of stuff from the trunk room (hey.. it was complaining that it's full)

snes9xw1.51 vista quicksave file of the garbled screen

I don't think that garbled screen bug is a patch problem. I doubt Snes9x and ZSnes support Vista.

Title: Re: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns
Post by: i30817 on November 29, 2007, 06:40:40 PM
Earlier in the thread it was said that zsnes 1.51 could play this, but i found that after beating noah the game can lock up when he says his last (very corny) dialog.
It just locks in the first letter:
I

I was using save states and cheating so i disabled those, saved the game, restored and tried again to the same result.

Title: Re: Major Release News ~ Metal Max Returns
Post by: Shadow on November 29, 2007, 08:17:45 PM
The solution is... patience! =P

I had the same issue (some others did as well). You just have to wait a little longer (I think using the emulator's fast-forward option shortens said wait) and the cutscene will continue.

Of course, this needs to be fixed, but it's not a game-breaking bug.

Hey everyone =D       just found this site a few days ago, and I am totally loving it!

I am however,  having a strange issue with Metal Max Returns.  Game runs fine, text is all correct, but for some strange reason during certain menu's (donating money, buying shells, sell / buy) my "up" button just doesnt work.  I assume that to donate funds and such, you must press "up" to select the amount, and I cant seem to do it.

If anyone has advice on this matter, I would love to hear it.

thanks for reading ^^

I've not had that, but from time to time I get blotches appearing on the BSCon screen and then if I don't stop playing the whole screen is filled with jagged lines and the game is unplayable. If I start up again it's fine so I haven't worried too much about it. I'm using the ZNES emulator and I haven't had this happen with any other games.

I have also the problem that the game doesn't start. Instead it's frozen black.
Mhhh, could also be that I use the wrong roms, because they all are 2 MB big...I even used one with [h] which probably means ''header removed''

I am using Vista, btw...

I did, it actually happened something. But after the title appeared the whole game stuck... hard to explain:
This title appeared:
http://www.romhacking.net/translations/snes/images/titles/1096titlescreen.jpg
After I tiped ENTER, the sprites got broke up into several parts and moved all over the screens. After retyping ENTER the whole computer started to freeze and I needed task manager to end Znes...

Seems it doesn't work that way ;_;

Since that was your only post here, chances are you're not still reading the forum, but if you are still around, did you manage to resolve it?

I'm having the same problem. It was kind of a pain the ass having to keep pressing down like seven times to select the item above the currently selected one to store (for example) instead of pressing up once. But I was willing to live with it (I thought perhaps it was just the way the game was programmed or something, though it didn't make any sense why they would do that).

But now I'm trying to buy some armour for my tank, and it's not working 'cause I can't make it go up. I even tried remapping it to the analog stick, then even the keyboard, neither worked.

Does anyone know what the cause of this is? And more importantly, how to fix it? I'm using the latest version of Snes9x (1.51), if it matters. It was an annoyance in at first, but now it seems like it may be a game-breaking (or at least game-crippling) bug.

I just now (before typing this paragraph) tried ZSNES, and a couple of the the menus I tired where "up" wasn't working before, appear to be fine... And even though I'm not that far into the game, I'd really hate to have to start over. I doubt I'll be lucky enough to find another Red Peony's Dagger before even entering the Southern Cave this time :(

So does anyone know what the problem is? Is anyone using Snes9x without this problem?

edit: I used the .srm file from Snes9x in ZSNES so I wouldn't lose my progress. However, when I do this, the problem carries over to ZSNES as well...

edit #2: Hmmm... okay, I think I've found the cause of the bug. I deleted the .srm in the ZSNES directory, and tried things again. It worked fine. So I remapped the controls back to how I had them before, using the B button for Menu/Okay, and the Y button for Cancel. After doing this, I get the Up problem. If I go back to the default, it works fine again. I tried changing Cancel to the A Button, and then the X button, and both have the game working fine again. I guess if it's an issue with the patch, and not the game/rom itself, it's probably not worth going and fixing this one minor bug. I suppose I'll just leave Cancel on X.

I'm curious though, can someone else try setting Cancel to Y (in any emulator(s)) and tell me if the same thing happens to them? Thanks.

Pleased you got it working. I can't help on the technical issues, but just to say that there is no need to worry about the Red Peony's Dagger. You can buy plenty as well as find them in the field in Negi with a bit of luck. Also, you are not far in the game, if you haven't yet got to Pobre Orbre, so starting again shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I wasn't far in then, by now I've already finished the Scorched Factory, so it's a bit late to be starting over again now :p

But like I said, there was fortunately no need to since the problem was related to the Y button being mapped to cancel.
