Title: Major Release News ~ Ys 5, At Long Last
Post by: Gideon Zhi on November 28, 2013, 02:00:13 AM
I must admit, I am at a loss for words writing this. Ys 5 has been a trial in so many ways and it has been in the works for so long that I don´t feel like I could do it justice in a one- or two-paragraph blurb. As such, I will let the translation speak for itself: it is without issue (that I know of), and includes some fairly substantial under-the-hood modifications to data storage and menu structures. Despite how bumpy the road has been, or perhaps because of it, I am intensely proud of this release. Enjoy!

As a further note, earlier this week XSeed Games released Memories of Celceta for the PS Vita, and their Ys releases on Steam are currently on sale. If you enjoy Ys 5 and haven´t bought any other titles in the series, please give XSeed your business. In celebration I´ve updated the translation of Ys 4 Mask of the Sun, of which Memories of Celceta is a remake. This update brings some of the terminology in line with XSeed´s version and includes various other fixes to the text, including the nasty glitchy too-long strings that erased bits of the frame.

Lastly, I´ve updated TwinBee Rainbow Bell Adventure with a minor fix to the Battle mode screen.

I´m going to attempt to keep up a bi-weekly release schedule for the foreseeable future, but I don´t like to make any hard-and-fast promises for something like this unless I´ve already got something very nearly ready for release. I think I can manage it for at least two more, though!

In any case, Ys 5 is now available. Enjoy!

I didn't particularly care for YS 5, but any release is a good release, so good job!

Thanks Gideon!

I was amazed anyone was still even trying to translate this game.As for Xseed, you are right. They are, to me, Working Designs 2.0. Most people don't realize that Xseed is made up of only 10 people, and most of the staff is doing two or more roles within the company at the same time. I just bought Ys Memories of Celceta Silver Anniversary Edition yesterday and I enjoyed it so far. I heard Xseed is interested in Falcom doing another Ys game, whether it is a new game or remaking Ys V.

Anyway, thank you again Gideon. Looking forward to your next release. At long last, indeed!!!

Finally!! I have been waiting for years! :P
Thanks a lot to everyone involved in the project!

I have seen a few things I think should be fixed:

1.The description of the Isios brush is... part of the desc. of the scale mail?
2.I don't know if this glitch is related to the translation or not. Near the end of the game, there are some places where part of the background disappears when you see a dialogue or open the menu. Those places are [minorspoilers] the secret base, outside the castle and the final boss [/minorspoilers].

BTW, does anyone know the use of the two brushes (the brush and the isios brush)? You can find them near the end of the game and both are in the very same room.

So, there's a new Ys 4 patch out? Because it doesn't look like it from reading the game's page.

A Ys man once said forgivy, but high defense. And never pay full price for late pizza.

....Not my thing, truth be told, but congratulations. Only 33 more translations until your title changes color!

Wow!  Congratulations Gid and the rest of AG!  High quality work as always.

I look forward to having some time to play this over the holidays.

Question:  Are you planning to have a separate patch for the Expert version as well in the future?  Would it be difficult to work the same fixes?  Amazing work none the less!  Many, many thanks.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.

At long last, I can finally play this game. Oh boy, after all these years waiting, I can play it. I am so happy. Words cannot express my thanks. Really, you're awesome. Thank you.

Man, these last two weeks have been oldschool ARPG heaven. Heck, I wasn't even expecting the YsIVMotS refurbishing. All we need now is something involving Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, or something from the Quintet trilogy and it'll be like Christmas in December for this 90s kid.

Great work! I've been eager for this release for some time once progress started picking up, and I blasted through it in a couple days. Like Xenovant though, I've found a minor, trivial bug from a hidden game feature that I should probably report as well.

So there's a hidden NPC in Felte that gives you the option to change your hair colour. The dialogue was located and translated just fine, of course.

(with the layer removed to show where Adol and the NPC are in direct correlation to the above)

The problem is that the hidden feature this unlocks in the customisation menu was naturally easy to miss, and is visually scrambled. Still works, though!

As always though, thanks for the release, we love it :D

That's not a glitch. It's your punishment for trying to change Adol's hair from the holy red.

Thanks, man.

I really, really mean that "thanks, man". More than I've ever meant it.

I guess it's not enough of a way to express how cool I think you are for this.

Not just this, of course, but this in particular.

You're the best.

This applies to Jeff, too. Brilliant work, as always. Thanks to everyone else involved in this as well. You've provided a great service to mankind. A few of us, anyway.

In addition, I haven't had this much fun in years. Amazing game.

This was hugely awaited, so great job!

Sadly the ending is bugged, causing the game to sort of soft reset mid sentence (though the music keeps playing). Possibly an effect of unlocking the hair color-option with it's garbled text?

Are you using zsnes? Don't use zsnes.

While I'm greatly thankful for this quality translation, I must say, I'm really disappointed in the game itself. I was waiting for it to be translated for years and was expecting a masterpiece, what I got is just a very short and generic 90s rpg that's ludicrously easy to boot.

Fighting system is extremely primitive and never evolves - you have just one attack, a forward slash, for the entire game. With the lack of any companions it fast becomes very boring and tedious, since you don't have anything to keep track of. Because of that you're very soon gonna be overinflated with money you have noting to spend on.
Magic system is equally primitive, clumsy and completely useless - every enemy dies from 2/3 sword hits anyway and you can't use magic on bosses. Not that it matters, as bosses are hilariously easy and defeated by just charging at them head on and ignoring their weak attacks.
Introduced jump mechanics is completely pointless as it's implemented about 3 times through the entire game. There are no enemies or strategies that justify it's existence.
Story wise it's the standard collect the crystals that seal *insert here* then fight the last boss scenario that was all the craze in the 90s. I wouldn't be complaining about that, even if it is such an overused premise, but considering how game's contemporaries did it much better and the fact that you're just 1 silent protagonist, the story feels very dry and week. It's unimpressive length doesn't help either.

Maybe I just over-hyped it for myself, but still.
Anyway, I hope this short review will help some folk to decide whether to play it or not.
If anything, it's a very beautiful game, however, in every other aspect it's absolutely unremarkable. Can't recommend it for anyone but genre enthusiasts like myself.
It is very short though, so in any case at least you're not gonna waste much time.

4 1/2 years, time goes fast...i'm very sorry for replying on a very old topic but i'd like to point out the issue with the hidden hair color option is still there. As user lamialily pointed out a long time ago, when unlocked the hair color option is all glitched up but it works. Is there any chance for a fix to that minor bug in the options menu? It's not essential but it'd be interesting playing as a blonde Adol without glitching the game! ;)
Oh yeah, great work with the patch! Thanks to you we can play this odd-but-good-anyway game to the end.

[...]playing as a blonde Adol...
Bah, now that's just disgusting.
