Could I watch Dancouga Nova in preparation of SRW L without having watched the original Dancouga?

I can't say I've watched it, but the general consensus would answer your question with another question: "Why would you WANT to watch Nova? SRW is not a valid reason." It's supposed to be pretty awful.

Oh my. Guess I'll steer clear, then. Just like how most of us stick to the manga for Linebarrels, right?

What Gid said.

And Dancouga Nova is totally unrelated to the original series. No story continuation*, no similar themes, no shared characters except for a single voice actor cameo.
It is it's own show that exists only to abuse the name.

I would recommend watching the original Dancouga INSTEAD of Nova.

Yatte yaruze!

*Except when the show indirectly claims Nova is named after the star mech of the 80s show, only to change their mind later and ***SPOILERS*** name the Nova after an alien doomsday machine instead. ***SPOILERS***
