  Shin Megami Tensei II
« on: December 11, 2007, 09:22:49 PM » by tofudragon7
I've been playing through this game, and it seems pretty awesome—I can't, for the life of me, figure out why I've never heard about it before, or why there don't seem to be any FAQs or fan sites out there in English. That, of course, is my problem... I haven't been able to figure out how to do a few things like, say, heal... auto-restore seems to only heal my main character, and while I've been using healing spells to heal my demons, after a while they run out of mp; the only way I've found to restore MP is by fusion to create entirely new demons, which seems a bit odd. Anyone seem to have figured out a good grip on how things work in this game? (I've just gotten to frozen town... for some strange reason, half the time I can't fuse demons because "level is too low," when other times with the same demons it works, even though they haven't gained any levels.

You can heal characters in various places, depending on your alignment. Some will only accept you if you're Law, some only if you're Chaos. Some are neutral and don't care.

As far as the "level too low" thing, you can only fuse demons who are equal to or less than your *main character's* level.

Oh! Well, so much for "gain godly demons instead of leveling up." So I guess this means the church will only heal my lawful demons?

It's more of a "once you're chaotic, the church won't take you" thing. And lawful demons won't be able to join you at that point (works the other way around, but law's for pansies).

Takes a while to get out of neutralville, though. There's only a couple points that really have a huge sway on your alignment.

At the end of things, just-faiz the means.

Ah. Well, thanks for the info! I'm definitely planning to go neutral though, just because I agree with the philosophy.

So I just hit a major pitfall: I have to storm the factory, and some guy tells me I need to raise my intelligence. Now, any game that doesn't give the main character any spells or magic points is being kind of tricky in suddenly asking for intelligence. The big problem is, though, that I've fed all my intelligence incense to Hiroko, and I'm way over-leveled (lvl 40; most of the monsters are about lvl 20). My main character's int is 7, and mag is 4. Anybody know approximately how high I need to raise it? I'm thinking I might just have to spend three hours in Amaterasu's cave or something...

You know, the game's no fun if you get TOO powerful....why, I remember my 300000-hour battle with YHWH...god, that was awesome. So much more satisfying than my second playthrough, when I whomped his arse.

As for the intelligence thing - remember, drinks at taverns temporarily boost your stats (just like in real life). I forget which one's best for INT, though.

You basically end up overleveled irregardless of what you do (boss XP is mad XP, there were plenty of times I leveled up four to six levels).  Considering how many fights I ran away from (I'm thinking upwards of a thousand or something really, really, ridiculous) The number of bosses I beat with weaponry alone was insane.  It was like I was playing Final Fantasy 6, or something.

To be fair, I emulator-cheated some good stuff outta the casinos, but it wasn't like the ultimate equipment in the game.  Those incenses are just way too common, or something.  In the middle of the game there's like 50 of 'em or something

Also: Is it just me, but are Ares and Shiva the best Demons in the game for abilities alone, basically?  I don't have any idea how you'd beat YHWH Deluxe without 'em, considering he's ridiculously difficult to hit (Even accuracy-upping your monsters a million billion times seems to do squat).  Also, Prayer made Satan easy too.  YWHW obviously is supposed to kind of screw demons over but still what's up with a boss with like 20,000 hp that can't be hit once by a guy who's pelting him with eight attacks?

Also: taru-kaja or whichever one raises attack pushing your damage over some sort of value so that it's near zero again.  Considering the vast majority of my main character's points were in KICKING ASS (Guns were kinda pointless annnnd he got no magic) he'd go over way before my demons did and that got annoying

Every single part of SMT1 makes this game look like a joke, especially trying to figure out where the hell you are in the bloody mall.  I mean, I enjoyed it, but it's so long that the schizofreniac difficulty curve seems really out of place.  Case in point, how easy the beetlejuice boss was.

Definitely the most difficult bosses, in order are

-Super YHWH
-Possibly Satan
-Lucifer
-The stupid heart thing that took forever
-Fake YHWH but he was annoying considering my level and I didn't know he was going to come from nowhere why were the Archangels so easy in this one
-Beezlebub
-Some Samurai with glowing eyes in a shack my memory is terrible screw off
-King Frost was a bitch because I ran a lot

And basically the only really difficult dungeon was the one to go fight the guy that turns into Satan (I didn't use the default names so sue me his name starts with a Z) because you get done up the bum randomly by Archangels who are really hard to convince to join you sometimes

Also I was Law most of the game for no real reason

If I could change the alphabet I'd put I and DD together

Hmm... well, I didn't TRY to get overleveled. I just get lost a LOT. ^_^

And I have to say, there IS something satisfying about having beaten every boss with autobattle (more challenging than some of the enemies!)

Oh, yeah...it was the fake YHWH/those angels that gave me the most trouble, actually (since I wasn't prepared AT ALL my first game - I leveled up about fifty times after that fight) (really felt like I killed god, was pissed to find out he was fake).

That fake schmuck took a couple days for me to beat...I ran out of potions (and I had a gazillion), no one had enough power to cast anything, and I think I only had a couple demons left alive. And they were hanging by a thread. Even the last boss never took me THAT far.

Again, though, second playthrough came easy. Probably because I wasn't thirty levels below the freakin' boss....

Also...autobattle's the panisest kind of battle. Real men keep tapping that attack button!

See, I think I got just barely leveled enough to get a much better healing spell right before I toasted the Fake YHWH first try.  He really wipes the floor with your demons, though.

The four levels you get from him are kinda nice, too.

No, but in real battles, I can have Hiroko use healing spells or her gun (which does about 2x as much damage as my main character's sword). The manliness in the autobattle is the terror in knowing that there's no way to stop and heal.

Also: my reason for going neutral is that the Mesians are terribly boring (what's the point in ruling everything if all you can do is sit around and pray?) while the Gaians seem to cower in fear and are very nihilistic about things. Chaos reminds me too much of Nietzsche.

EDIT: Okay, the battle against the three archangels was NOT autobattleable. I wound up, by the end of the second battle, depleting several demons' 200+ mp reserves on buff spells, and most of them were zombies.

EDIT 2: I typed that right before I realized I had to fight YHWH. Double oh boy.

EDIT 3: Is there supposed to be a spell called "Toraport?"

Going Neutral is even more obvious as a choice in SMT2 because the factions basically work so hard to alienate you in regards to SMT1 where that's not really the issue because it's your alignment throughout that determines your faction not just a simple yes or no choice.

Actually, it's not quite a yes or no question—I was chaotic in alignment from smashing arcadia before I answered the yes or nos.

Also: If anyone hasn't discovered the wonders of the Bronze box, you can win these from the casino in Ropongo. It lets you encounter ANY enemy from your database! SO useful for creating Serei!

New dilemma: I've got a Kingu that I can't seem to upgrade into a Tiamat. Anything that would raise its level won't fuse with it; I tried fusing a Nidhoggr with a gnome to get it to jump two levels, and that wouldn't work either. Is this a demon I need to unlock? Because judging from the rest of the Jaryuu's sheer attack power, I want it.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's a shame the game won't let me get boss monsters BEFORE I beat them. >_>

Also: I have to say that, while Mara wasn't the hardest boss I've fought, he sure as hell was the ugliest (in any game ever, actually)
